An
introduction from Donna L. B. Lowry, MD
Director, Hope Summer Institute
I
would like to introduce you to Hope College’s new venture,
the Hope Summer Institute (HSI) Lifetime of Learning Series, and
invite you to participate. As a Hope alumna (’89), physician,
and physician’s spouse, I am very excited about Hope’s
commitment to this series and trust that your interest will also
be piqued.
The
goal of HSI is to recapture the energy and love of the liberal arts
for professionals. In so doing, the individual will be provided
with challenge and rejuvenation in work, personal, family and community
life. The mission of the HSI is to create an adventure in learning
and living, not only for knowledge and wisdom, but also meaning
and purpose as is found through the liberal arts in the context
of the historic Christian faith.
The
first HSI conference, The Art of Medicine: Thinking beyond Diagnosis
and Therapy, will be offered in Summer 2005. Through exploring Inquiry,
Innovation, Communication and Balance, medical professionals will
have the opportunity to be mentally, physically and spiritually
challenged. CME credits are also being sought through joint sponsorship
with the Grand Rapids Medical Education and Research Consortium.
The
conference will be held over a two and one-half day period and will
allow for summer vacation activities too. Lectures and discussions
on professional development, personal accountability and development,
community contribution, and faith will occur in the morning. Fun
opportunities for learning and recreation with families, on and
off campus, will be offered in the afternoon. The day will be punctuated
by a wonderful evening meeting with colleagues and guests over dinner
and a day’s end discussion. There will be plenty of opportunities
for new friends to be made and for old friendships to be rekindled.
For those who have children, a fantastic “family friendly”
Hope experience is being planned.
If
you have ever shared my feelings of working so hard in the daily
grind of patient care, practice management and infrastructure politics
that we may be sacrificing our own mental, physical and spiritual
well being; and if, as I, you wonder how you have gone from an energetic
college student, who in late adolescence decided to pursue a medical
career, to someone who yearns for the energy and inspiration that
your undergraduate liberal arts education offered, then the Hope
Summer Institute (HSI) Lifetime of Learning Series 2005, is for
you. It was precisely through multidisciplinary studies that our
young minds were opened and ideas were born, plans were solidified
and execution occurred.
Consider
joining us in late July 2005 where we will be encouraged in our
journey and our lifetime of learning will continue.
