Biography
Robert H. Schuller, born in 1926, graduated from Hope College in 1947 and from Western Theological Seminary in 1950. He was licensed and ordained as a minister by the Reformed Church in America the same year he graduated. His first pastorate was at Ivanhoe Reformed Church in Chicago (1950-1955).
Encouraged by Norman Vincent Peale, Schuller answered a call in 1955 to begin a unique ministry in Garden Grove, California. Finding no vacant hall in which to conduct services, Dr. Schuller began preaching (March 27, 1955) from the Orange Drive-in Theater’s concession stand. This arrangement allowed parishioners to stay in their cars while viewing the service. In 1956, a stained-glass chapel was built and dedicated nearby, but because some handicapped parishioners could not leave their cars to worship, Schuller conducted two services each Sunday; one in the chapel and one in the drive-in sanctuary. Schuller envisioned a “walk-in drive-in” church and, after discussing his proposal with architect Richard Neutra, the chapel was sold and construction on a new facility began.
In 1961, the Garden Grove Community Church, incorporating a traditional church building with the parking lot capacity to handle drive-in worshippers as well, was dedicated. The Tower of Hope, a multi-story ministry complex, was constructed shortly after the new sanctuary, in 1966.
The ministry continued to grow, incorporating a nationally televised religious program entitled the Hour of Power in 1970. The program’s incredible success and the loyalty of viewers and Garden Grove Community Church members led to the 1978 groundbreaking ceremonies for the architecturally stunning Crystal Cathedral (designed by architect Philip Johnson), which was dedicated in 1980. In 1987, construction began on the International Center for Possibility Thinking & Family Life Center, which provides a gymnasium, recreational facilities, educational rooms for young people, and offices for the Hour of Power. In 1990, the Arvella Schuller Carillon and the Crean Tower (also designed by architect Philip Johnson) were dedicated.
Many of Robert Schuller’s family members are also important leaders in the Crystal Cathedral Ministries. Arvella Schuller, Robert H. Schuller’s wife since 1950, is secretary of the board of Crystal Cathedral Ministries and works as the producer of the Hour of Power. Robert A. Schuller, the founder’s son and a frequent guest preacher on the Hour of Power, joined the ministry after attending Hope College and Fuller Theological Seminary. He is a board member of Crystal Cathedral Ministries and founding pastor of the Rancho Capistrano Community Church. Jim Coleman, Robert Schuller’s son-in-law, is president of the Hour of Power. Another son-in-law, Jim Penner, has written a biography entitled Goliath about Robert H. Schuller.
Robert H. Schuller, a prolific author, has written numerous books incorporating his philosophy of possibility thinking, including Power Ideas For a Happy Family, Power Thoughts, The Be Happy Attitudes, and Self Esteem: the New Reformation. Two of Schuller’s daughters, Sheila Coleman and Jeanne Dunn, have also worked with him on his books, while Paul Dunn (Jeanne Dunn’s husband) has co-authored several books with Schuller.
Scope and Content
The Robert H. Schuller / Crystal Cathedral Ministries Records, 1955-1993, primarily contain public relations and publicity materials created by the Garden Grove Community Church, the Hour of Power, and the Crystal Cathedral. These records have been arranged alphabetically and then chronologically into eight series: Crystal Cathedral, Eugene Coffin, Correspondence, Garden Grove Community Church, Hour of Power, Photographs, Press Clips & Audio Reports, and Robert H. Schuller. The major strength of the collection is its coverage (which includes both positive and negative perspectives) of the growth of Robert Schuller’s ministry. The collection’s major weakness is its lack of internal documentation and financial materials.
Crystal Cathedral (1980-1993) contains reference files of Cathedral employees and promotional and stewardship material. Arranged alphabetically by topical heading, the series highlights the construction and dedication of the cathedral, as well as the many programs and concerts which have been held there since its opening in 1980. Publicity for the Cathedral’s two biggest shows, The Glory of Christmas and The Glory of Easter, is also included. Weekly and special service listings, as well as other news items are contained in Crystal Cathedral Discovery and Crystal Cathedral News/Preview, two regular publications of the ministry. Information about the ministry prior to 1980, including similar newsletters, is located in the Garden Grove Community Church series.
Eugene Coffin File (1976-1989) contains the office files of Rev. Coffin, Executive Minister of Pastoral Services & Director of Helping Hand at Crystal Cathedral Ministries. These files are the most complete office files in the collection and provide important glimpses into the organizational structure of the ministry. The Inter-Office Memoranda provide a scattered look at the lines of communication in place from 1980-1981.
Correspondence (1955-1991) contains early correspondence between Robert H. Schuller and such notable people as Norman Vincent Peale and Jesse Jackson, as well as scattered memoranda between Schuller and members of his administrative staff. Correspondence with Young Chang Chun recalls the tremendous success of Chun’s appeal to Robert H. Schuller and his supporters for funds to build a new school in Korea. A similar file includes correspondence created during planning for the Cathedral’s role in Hands Across America (1986). Correspondence shows how the administration of the ministry has grown and changed over time.
Garden Grove Community Church (1955-1979) contains reference files and publicity created during the early years of Robert Schuller’s ministry. The construction of the first walk-in drive-in church and the Tower of Hope are covered, as well as the history of the church and Robert Schuller’s ministry in general. Church directories, newsletters, and bulletins document the events and the growth of Robert Schuller’s ministry during its first twenty-five years.
Hour of Power (1970-1993) contains information about this internationally televised, weekly religious program. Videotapes used for editing, as well as historical purposes, make up the bulk of the series. Both Beta-max and VHS formats are present, although most of the tapes are VHS. The videotapes are arranged chronologically and numerically wherever possible, and exceptions have been noted in the container listing. Dates for the videotapes reflect both air and editing dates and are included in parentheses. The name of the guest that week is also listed in parentheses. Also included in the series are several indexes to the videotapes, photographs of the many guests who appeared on the show, and transcripts (which include Schuller’s Sunday sermons).
Photographs (1955-1991) contain a wealth of images (both black and white and color) spanning the entirety of Schuller’s ministry in California. Family photographs, building construction photographs, and publicity photographs show the early services of the Garden Grove Community Church, as well as the construction of the Crystal Cathedral. Many images of Schuller’s staff are also included. The scrapbooks were created by a Crystal Cathedral volunteer, Kathryn Lundquist, and include many items relating to her personal life, as well as her life as a paraprofessional counselor, tour guide, and pastoral care zone leader at the Crystal Cathedral. Ms. Lundquist passed away in February 1985. The series is arranged alphabetically by topical heading, with the exception of images from photograph albums, photographic scrapbooks, and slides. These subgroups are located at the end of the series in alphabetical order by topical heading.
Press Clips and Audio Reports (1955-1994) contain a wealth of information about Robert H. Schuller, his family, and the Crystal Cathedral Ministries. Both national and international newspaper stories were clipped by several news clipping services during the entirety of Schuller’s career. Transcripts of radio and television coverage are also included, although they do not provide as complete a picture as the newspaper clippings and are often edited. A fascinating strength of this series is the information it provides about the larger subject of religious television and the role that religion has played in the United States during the past forty years. The series is arranged chronologically. Special topics such as Hands Across America and Schuller’s 1991 brain surgery have separate folders, yet still can be found in the appropriate section of the chronology. Several important articles on Robert Schuller and his family are located in folders for May 1983 and August 1987.
Robert H. Schuller (1963-1992) primarily contains articles and manuscripts written by Schuller. Manuscripts usually include several revisions which show the creative process involved in Schuller’s writing. In two cases, The Power of Being Debt Free and Tough Minded Faith for Tender Hearted People, dictation tapes (cassettes) are included; no paper copy accompanies them. Many photographs of Schuller are located in the Photographs series. The series is arranged alphabetically by topical heading.
Addition 1994 (1972-1994) contains additional materials documenting both the Garden Grove Community Church in the 1970s and the Crystal Cathedral in the 1990s. Church bulletins comprise the bulk of the addition, although files containing marketing research reports (1986-1989) and statistics on Schuller’s cassette tape ministry (1988-1990) also contain important information about Robert Schuller Ministries.
Addition 1998 (1954-1995) contains several of the main headings of the original collection, including Crystal Cathedral, Garden Grove Community Church, Eugene Coffin and Videotapes. The largest part of the addition is the Robert Schuller portion. Under this heading fall many other categories, including correspondences, news clippings, photographs, sermons and notes. Of special interest is his syndicated column, “It’s Possible,” and an extensive coverage of the Tax Exemption issue in the early 1980s. Due to the excessive amounts of redundant news clippings concerning this issue, only a selected amount was saved. These were felt to be the most pertinent, as well as portraying the various different opinions on the subject.
There is also a folder containing Jennie Schuller’s (Robert’s mother) last will and testament. In the Videotape section, there are two main groups: Miscellaneous Videos, which are mostly television interviews on programs such as the Today Show and Larry King. Hour of Power makes up the other portion, and under this heading is the main Hour of Power Program, as well as the “Managing Change Through Possibility Thinking” series and over 1000 show listings. Three publications in bound form are also included, as well as miscellaneous sermons.
This addition, having a very large scope date-wise, provides an informative, nonbiased look at most of Robert Schuller’s ministry. As an addition, it makes the main collection more complete.
