History

Florence Walvoord, the daughter of John D. Walvoord, was born in Cedar Grove, Wisconsin in 1896. Florence graduated from Hope College in 1918 and taught at Wisconsin Memorial Academy from 1918 to 1921. She received her Master's degree from the Teachers College of Columbia University in 1936. Miss Walvoord was an active missionary, serving in Japan from 1922 to 1940, in India from 1941 to 1947, and again in Japan from 1947 to 1960. She was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure in 1960 and died in Sanger Manor, Texas in 1967.

Scope and Content

The Florence Walvoord papers consist of materials from 1922 to 1960 which document her missionary activities. Included are diaries, pamphlets, photographs, scrapbooks, and periodicals. The folders have been arranged alphabetically by topical headings.
The papers primarily document Miss Walvoord's activities in Japan through her diaries, photographs, the newsletter "Memo to Missionaries," correspondence, and an 8 mm movie "Baiko Jo Gakuin." Her work in India is represented by materials dealing with the Ashram issue, and Dr. Savarirayan Jesudason. The scrapbooks included in this collection are collections of poetry and humor.
