Society
The Holland Area Historical Society focuses
on the history and heritage of the Holland area. Its programs are designed
to inform the membership through a series of quality presentations,
tours, and other events focusing on the area's past.
If you are not a member, we encourage you
to join our group and participate in an exciting year of programs!
Gerald R. Ford
Museum Tour
Tuesday, September 11, 2007 - 2:00-4:00 p.m.
Grand Rapids, Michigan
To kick off the new program year, we will be traveling to Grand Rapids
to tour the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum to enjoy the exhibits
concerning his presidency and walk the area grounds. Admission to the
museum is a special group rate of $5.00 per person, and the cost to
ride the bus to and from the museum is $4.00 (leaving Holland
at 1:00 p.m.).

Van Raalte’s First Emigrants

Henry ten Hoor is a legend when it comes to his stories. Come hear
ten Hoor share the story of Derk and Louise Arnoud emigrating to
Boston, Massachusetts, with the help of Rev. A. C. Van Raalte,
instead of Holland, Michigan.
Holland Police Department History

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the organization of the
Holland Police Department. Join us for an insightful evening with
Chief John Kruithoff as he illustrates the interesting history
of this essential city department.
Hope Church
Annual Christmas Potluck

Our annual Christmas potluck is a Holland Area Historical Society tradition.
This year we will visit Hope Church. A church spokesperson will describe its
history and give a guided tour of the church building. Call 395-7798 after November

Banking History in Holland

The history of Holland’s banking institutions is an important study
of how Holland established itself as a great place to do business. Steve
VanderVeen, Hope College Professor of Management, will share his extensive
research and insights on this subject.
The Farm That Was a Zoo
Tuesday, February 12, 2008 – 7:30 p.m.

Lakewood Farm was wrought from the land with inspiration from George F. Getz
during the early part of the 20th century. Eventually, he filled the farm with
animals of all kinds and sizes and soon the farm became a place of leisure for
the people living in and visiting the Holland area. Join local historian Geoffrey
Reynolds for an evening of images and history about this fascinating place on
the lake.
Holland Hospital History

With the completion of the latest Holland Hospital expansion comes the
time to reflect on the history of the hospitals that have been established
in Holland over time. Join Tim Breed, Holland Hospital Public Relations
Coordinator, as he shares this history.
History of the Tulip Time Festival

This year marks the 79th annual Tulip Festival for Holland. Join local
author and historian Randy Vande Water and learn more about why this
colorful and entertaining festival continues to draw thousands of visitors
to our area each year.
Ice Cream Social and Tour of
Historic New Groningen School
Tuesday, June 10, 2008 – 7:30 p.m.
Zeeland, Michigan
We bring our program year to a close with a visit to the newly restored
historic New Groningen School. Enjoy ice cream and tour the exhibits
to learn more about the history of the school and the New Groningen area.
Cost will be $1.00 per person. Members and their guests only, and reservations

HOLLAND AREA
HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION
The major goal of the Society is to bring
together persons with an interest in history and at the same time promote
an awareness in the general public of the cultural heritage of the
Holland area. In accordance with this goal, the Historical Society
sponsors, on a regular basis, a variety of lectures, field trips and
other historical activities. Monies collected through membership fees
and any other fund raising activities go towards financing the activities
of the Society. The Holland Area Historical Society is not affiliated
with the Holland Museum.

Memberships
Individual: $10 per year
- entitles you to vote, hold office and participate in all activities
sponsored by the Society.
Family: $15 per year - covers all members of family;
benefits same as Individual with one vote per family.
Sustaining: $25 per year - this category
is for individuals who would like to provide greater financial
support for the Society.
Life: $300 - enables you to enjoy regular membership
benefits on a continuous basis.
Student: $5 per year - benefits same as Individual.
Senior Citizen: $5 per year - benefits same
as Individual.
Non-Profit Institutional: $15 per year.
Corporate: $50 per year.
