HOPE COLLEGE

Black River Near US-31 - The Pull
The Pull, which debuted in 1898, is one of Hope's longest traditional events. Each fall a team of freshman and sophomore men train intensively for a tug-of-war. Pits are dug and morale partners help encourage the effort of each puller.

Civic Center
Located at 8th and Pine, the Civic Center is where regular season home men's basketball games are played. It is also the location of the fall Nykerk Cup competition. In this event, first held in 1936, the freshman women compete against the sophomore women in song, drama, and oration. The Civic Center has also long served as a rain location for Hope's commencement exercises.

A. C. Van Raalte Statue
(Centennial Park, Central Avenue and Graves Place)
Given to the City of Holland by Hope College, this sculpture was dedicated in Centennial Park in 1997 as a part of the community's sesquicentennial celebration. It was made possible through a gift from Peter H. Huizenga and celebrates the life of city and college's founder.

Biology Field Station

Located near the lakeshore, this land serves as an outdoor laboratory for the biology department.

Information for this tour guide was gathered from archival sources in the Hope College Collection of the Joint Archives and official Hope College histories written by Preston Stegenga and Wynand Wichers. Further information on the college can be obtained from the Joint Archives of Holland which is located on the ground floor of the Van Wylen Library. Each edition of the college alumni directory also contains data on the history of the college and its buildings. The latest edition is 1997.
