Using FirstSearch

Getting in: Click on research options from the top navigation bar on the Library’s web page. Select FirstSearch from the list of databases.

Once you are in, navigate using the lefthand menu bar.

1. Choosing a Database:

When you get into FirstSearch, you will see a list of all the databases. You may also choose to list databases by topic by clicking on the link on the lefthand menu bar. Click on the database name or check up to 3 databases to search simultaneously.

2. Entering your search:

  • For most searches use keyword.
  • Combine terms using AND, OR.
  • Place quotation marks around phrases
  • Truncate terms using an asterisk (*)

Examples
"global warming" and hurricane*
children and violence and television

You may limit your search to full-text articles, however this is not recommended for initial searching (you may miss great stuff).
Additional features like limiting by article type are available. Ask a librarian if you want to learn more about these features.

3. Viewing/Printing results:

  • The book icon () indicates if the Van Wylen Library subscribes to a periodical.
  • You may mark interesting articles using the check boxes, then click on MARKED RECORDS to view them.
  • Many articles are full-text. Click on the blue full-text link () to view an article.
  • To print, click on the Print icon () at the top of the screen. This reformats the records and you can then click on your browsers print button. You may also email the articles to yourself. Click on the E-mail icon () near the top of the screen and follow the directions.

4. Locating articles in the Library: The book icon () indicates that the library owns at least part of the periodical cited in the record. It does not mean that we absolutely will have the specific article cited.
To determine where you find an article, you must consult the HopeCAT library catalog.
  1. Work from a printed list of citations or note the citation (vol., issue & page numbers) for an article.
  2. Do a title search for the name of the magazine/journal. Click on Search the catalog at Van Wylen Library to link to a HopeCAT search for the magazine/journal you need.
  3. Determine the format for the specific article ( current, microfiche, bound )
  4. Note the location of that format and the call number for the magazine/journal.

If you need additional assistance, please contact the Reference Desk at 395-7904.
