Using LexisNexis
LexisNexis provides access to over 5,000 full-text publications. This service covers national and regional newspapers, magazines, transcripts, wire services, federal and state court opinions, federal and state statutes, federal regulations, and SEC filings. Information is updated daily.
Searching:
In order to begin a search in LexisNexis choose the type of information you wish to find: News, Business, Legal Research, Medical, or Reference

Basic Searching
- Keyword Search Box:Searches for your term(s) in the headlines or lead paragraphs. Enter words or phrases (quotation marks are unnecessary).
(Ex: GM OR General Motors)
- Additional Terms box: You can limit your search by specifying additional words or phrases that must appear in the document before it will be retrieved.
(Ex:sales OR marketing)
- Source & Date Options: Use the drop-down menus to select from pre-determined options: (eg. searching by specific dates or date ranges)

More Options
This option allows you to search specific fields
(headlines, headlines and lead paragraphs, full text, caption, and authors).
Also, it is possible to limit to a particular publication title.
Search Tips:
Boolean Operators
- AND: finds both search terms or phrases.
(ex: affirmative action and California
- OR: finds either search terms or phrases
(ex: socks or stockings
- AND NOT: used to exclude terms or phrases from being searched
(ex: computers and not macintosh
Proximity Searching
- pre/n: finds words or phrases within "n" words of each other & in the specified order
(ex: cable pre/2 television)
(finds "cable television" but not "television cable")
- w/n: finds words or phrases within "n" words of each other
(ex: Kosovo w/6 peace keeping)
(finds "peace keeping" within 6 words of "Kosovo")
- w/s: finds words or phrases within the same sentence
(ex: world w/s economy)
("world" and "economy" must appear in the same sentence)
- w/p: both words or phrases must be in the same paragraph
(ex: rule w/p sanction)
("rule" and "sanction" must appear in the same paragraph)
Truncation/Wildcards
Sources (Search for a Particular Publication Title):
You can search for any publication title by clicking on the icon found on the top left portion of the screen. Type the title you are looking for in the search box, click the [Find Title] button. If click on "Search This Title" you will be taken to a search screen where the system will limit its search to the title you have chosen.

Printing / Saving (Downloading to disk) / E-Mailing:
Only one full-text document can be printed/downloaded/e-mailed at a time. To perform any of these functions you should be viewing the full record.
- To Print: Click on the browser's "File" pull-down menu and select "Print"
- To Save to Disk: Hightlight the article's text, and "copy" it to the clip-board. Then open a text-editor or word processor (eg. Notepad, or Microsoft Word). Paste the article into a new document. Save that document.
- To E-Mail: Click on the e-mail icon. Make sure to type in your full e-mail address (ex: sandler@hope.edu).
