Hope College senior Ellen Schultz of Maple City
has been voted a GTE Academic All-American.
A cross country and track standout who has majored in
psychology and Spanish, Schultz has been voted to the second team
in the Fall At-Large category which honors student-athletes in
several sports from NCAA Division II and III colleges throughout
the United States.
The GTE Academic All-American program is sponsored by the
College Sports Information Directors Association.
Schultz is the second Hope athlete to achieve GTE Academic
All-America recognition this year. Senior Brandon Graham was
honored in football last fall. She becomes the 29th GTE honoree
from Hope since 1979 and just the third in cross country. The
other GTE Academic All-Americans in cross country were Tauna
Jecmen (1987 & 1988) and Marie Matchett (1997).
Schultz achieved NCAA Division III All-America distinction
last fall as she finished 25th at the national championship meet.
She was voted to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic
Association (MIAA) all-conference cross country three years and
has been a College Cross Country Coaches Association Academic
All-American for four years.
She is also a standout distance runner in track. As a
junior she was the MIAA champion in the 5,000-meter run and this
spring has qualified for the NCAA championships in the 10,000-
meter run.
As a junior she was named to the Mortar Board national honor
society. She is also a member of national honor societies in
psychology (Psi Chi) and Spanish (Sigma Delta Pi). She was
recently presented the faculty's C. James Stringer, Jr. Memorial
Award as an outstanding student majoring in psychology.
A 1994 graduate of Glen Lake High School, she is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael (Martha) Schultz of Maple City.
Schultz is one of four student-athletes to be named GTE at-
large Academic All-Americans. The others are Sam Glass of Calvin
(soccer), Marisa Proctor of Alma (diving) and Cara Jansen of
Calvin (soccer).
