Several Hope College students earned honors during the National Association of Teachers of Singing Great Lakes Regional Audition, held at Western Michigan University on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 30-31.

          A total of 13 Hope students participated, with
  three receiving cash awards as finalists and seven named
  semi-finalists.  There were 340 contestants overall,
  representing colleges from Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and
  Ontario, Canada.
          Greg Frens, a junior from Grand Rapids, received
  second place in the "Second-Year College Men" category.
  Quincy Marr, a freshman from Gridley, Ill., received first
  place in the "First- and Second-Year College Musical
  Theatre" category.
          Patricia Rhiew, a junior from Farmington Hills,
  received first place in the "Third-Year College Women"
  category.  As the winner in her category, she received a
  scholarship to attend the Aims Institute in Graz, Austria,
  in the summer of 1999.
          The Hope students who were named semi-finalists
  are:  junior Jill Bennink of Holt (Third-Year College
  Women); senior Megan Hicks of Trabuco Canyon, Calif.
  (Fourth-Year College Women); junior Renee Meyer of Mount
  Vernon, Iowa (Third-Year College Women); junior Joni Norwood
  of Twin Lake (Third-Year College Women); junior Katie
  Shelley of Saginaw (Second-Year College Women); sophomore
  Erich Shoemaker of Traverse City (Second-Year College Men)
  and sophomore David Van Der Laan of Lombard, Ill. (Second-
  Year College Men).
          The Hope students are taught by Dr. Stuart Sharp,
  Dr. Margaret Kennedy-Dygas and Professor Linda Dykstra.
