Eight Hope College runners have achieved all-
conference cross country recognition from the Michigan
Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA).
The Hope cross country teams, coached by Mark Northuis,
finished second in their respective conference standings.
Senior Ellen Schultz of Glen Lake (Maple City-Glen Lake HS)
has the distinction of becoming just the sixth runner in MIAA
women's cross country history to achieve all-conference honors
for four years. She has also been an All-MIAA track athlete
twice.
Schultz and senior teammate Becky Timmer of Pella, Iowa
Pella HS) are All-MIAA first team honorees while senior Cyndi
Bannink of Holland (Holland Christian HS) and sophomore Andrea
Egeler of Fruitport (Fruitport HS) earned second team honors.
Last spring Timmer earned All-MIAA honors in track. Schultz and
Timmer were NCAA cross country All-Americans in 1997.
At the league championship meet Schultz and Timmer finished
second and fourth respectively while Bannink was 12th and Egeler
17th.
In men's cross country sophomore Joe Veldman of Sawyer
(Three Oaks-River Valley HS) and freshman Dylan Wade of Beulah
(Benzie Central HS) achieved All-MIAA first team honors while
junior Paul Berke of Park Ridge, Ill. (Maine Township HS) and
sophomore Garrett Childs of Breckenridge (Breckenridge HS) earned
second team recognition.
At the league championship meet Wade and Veldman were
seventh and tenth respectively while Childs was 12th and Berke
13th.
