Hope College senior David DeHommel of Jenison has been voted a second team GTE football Academic All-American.
The award climaxes an outstanding collegiate career for
DeHommel who was a four-year letterwinner who started at
defensive back and was among the nation's leading NCAA Division
III kick return specialists.
The GTE Academic All-America award recognizes student-
athletes who excel in both the classroom and on the field of
competition. The GTE program is sponsored by the College Sports
Information Directors Association (CoSIDA).
DeHommel becomes the 31st Hope student-athlete to achieve
GTE Academic All-American recognition since 1973. He is Hope's
11th GTE honoree in football.
A starter since midway through his freshman year, DeHommel
had 10 career pass interceptions. He returned kickoffs all four
years, averaging 22.3 yards per return. As a junior he ranked
10th in the nation among Division III players averaging 27.3
yards per kickoff return. This past season he averaged 25.9
yards per kickoff return.
"Dave DeHommel is a great young man and very deserving of
GTE Academic All-America status," praised coach Dean Kreps. "He
is everything we look for in a Hope College football player. He
obviously is very intelligent and a tremendous athlete, but most
of all, he is a great person. It has been a real privilege to
coach Dave the last four years."
DeHommel is an accounting major. He has also lettered in
track and field. A 1995 graduate of Jenison High School, he is
the son of Mr. and John (Karen) DeHommel of Jenison.
He is one of three football players from the Michigan
Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) to be honored. Alma
senior placekicker Ric Brands is a first team honoree while
Albion junior defensive back Nick Gates joins DeHommel on the
second team.
