Several Hope College athletes who played on fall
sports teams have been honored for their achievements.
Senior Tina Gill of Kalamazoo (Kalamazoo Central HS) has
been named to the Great Lakes All-Region women's soccer team by
the College Soccer Coaches Association. She is the first Hope
female soccer player to achieve this distinction three
consecutive years.
Eight members of the cross country teams were named to the
first Great Lakes Regional team by the Cross Country Coaches
Association. They are senior Cyndi Bannink of Holland (Holland
Christian HS), junior Paul Berke of Park Ridge, Ill. (Maine
Township HS), sophomore Andrea Egeler of Fruitport (Fruitport
HS), sophomore Jennifer Ernst of Westerville, Ohio (Westerville
HS), sophomore Nicole Reynolds of Mattawan (Mattawan HS), senior
Ellen Schultz of Glen Lake (Maple City-Glen Lake HS), senior
Becky Timmer of Pella, Iowa (Pella HS), and freshman Dylan Wade
of Beulah, Mich. (Benzie Central HS).
Seniors Becky Schmidt of Holland (Holland HS) and Heather
Velting of Byron Center (Grand Rapids South Christian HS) were
voted to the Great Lakes All-Region volleyball team. Schmidt was
subsequently voted an NCAA Division III All-American. Both
Schmidt and Velting are two-time All-Region honorees.
Seniors David DeHommel of Jenison (Jenison HS) and Adam
Paarlberg Alto (Caledonia HS) were named to the GTE Academic All-
District football team. DeHommel was subsequently voted a GTE
football Academic All-American.

     Hope College senior David DeHommel of Jenison has been voted a second team GTE football Academic All-American. The award climaxes an outstanding collegiate career forDeHommel who was a four-year letterwinner who started atdefensive back and was among the nation's leading NCAA DivisionIII kick return specialists. The GTE Academic All-America award recognizes student-athletes who excel in both the classroom and on the field ofcompetition. The GTE program is sponsored by the College SportsInformation Directors Association (CoSIDA). DeHommel becomes the 31st Hope student-athlete to achieveGTE Academic All-American recognition since 1973. He is Hope's11th GTE honoree in football. A starter since midway through his freshman year, DeHommelhad 10 career pass interceptions. He returned kickoffs all fouryears, averaging 22.3 yards per return. As a junior he ranked10th in the nation among Division III players averaging 27.3yards per kickoff return. This past season he averaged 25.9yards per kickoff return. "Dave DeHommel is a great young man and very deserving ofGTE Academic All-America status," praised coach Dean Kreps. "Heis everything we look for in a Hope College football player. Heobviously is very intelligent and a tremendous athlete, but mostof all, he is a great person. It has been a real privilege tocoach Dave the last four years." DeHommel is an accounting major. He has also lettered intrack and field. A 1995 graduate of Jenison High School, he isthe son of Mr. and John (Karen) DeHommel of Jenison. He is one of three football players from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) to be honored. Almasenior placekicker Ric Brands is a first team honoree whileAlbion junior defensive back Nick Gates joins DeHommel on the second team.

  3. D. Wesley Poythress Is Named Assistant Dean

     D. Wesley Poythress of the Hope College staff has been promoted to assistant dean/multicultural life and liaison to the college's president for minority participation.
