Hope College honored faculty members for service, academic achievement and professional involvement during the college's annual recognition luncheon on Monday, Jan. 11.

Hope College honored faculty members for service, academic achievement and professional involvement during the college's annual recognition luncheon on Monday, Jan. 11.

          The luncheon traditionally marks the beginning of
  the college's second semester.  Participating were John H.
  Jacobson, president; Jacob E. Nyenhuis, provost; Alfredo M.
  Gonzales, assistant provost; James M. Gentile, dean for the
  natural sciences; Nancy S. Miller, dean for the social
  sciences; and William D. Reynolds, dean for the arts and
  humanities.
          Allen R. Brady of the biology faculty and Delbert
  L. Michel of the art faculty were recognized for 35 years of
  service.
          Several faculty were honored for 30 years of
  service:  Joan C. Conway (music), Herbert L. Dershem
  (computer science), Robert E. Elder Jr. (political science),
  Jack E. Holmes (political science), Bruce McCombs (art),
  James P. Motiff (psychology), Judith A. Motiff (modern and
  classical languages), Peter J. Schakel (English), Gisela G.
  Strand-Hales (modern and classical languages) and Donald H.
  Williams (chemistry).
          Rodney F. Boyer of the chemistry faculty was
  recognized for 25 years of service.  Faculty honored for 20
  years of service were:  Ion T. Agheana (modern and classical
  languages), John D. Cox (English), Sander deHaan (modern and
  classical languages) and Robin Klay (economics and business
  administration).
          Two professors received this year's Provost's
  Award for Excellence in Teaching:  Susan M. Cherup
  (education) and William F. Polik (chemistry).  Matthew J.
  Elrod (chemistry) was selected as the college's third
  Towsley Research Scholar.
          Faculty honored for serving on the college's
  Teaching Enhancement Workshop Committee were:  James B.
  Heisler, chair (economics and business administration);
  Hersilia Alvarez-Ruf (modern and classical languages);
  Barbara Mezeske (English); Maura M. Reynolds (modern and
  classical languages, and director of advising); Michael E.
  Silver (chemistry); Kathy Winnett-Murray (biology); and Boyd
  H. Wilson (religion).
          Jeanine Dell'Olio (education) was recognized for
  having received the Hope Outstanding Professor Educator
  (H.O.P.E.) Award in the spring of 1998.  Leslie L. Wessman
  (education) was honored for having been named the Arnold and
  Esther Sonneveldt Professor of Education at the college.
          Acknowledged as authors and editors during the
  past year were:  Barry L. Bandstra (religion), Albert A.
  Bell Jr. (history), Donald Cronkite (biology), James M.
  Gentile (dean for the natural sciences), Kelly Jacobsma (Van
  Wylen Library), George Kraft (kinesiology), Dean Kreps
  (kinesiology), Anne R. Larsen (modern and classical
  languages), Donald A. Luidens (sociology and social work),
  Sharon Miller (sociology and social work), Phillip A. Munoa
  III (religion), Steven D. Smith (kinesiology), J. Jeffery
  Tyler (religion), Allen D. Verhey (religion) and Kathy
  Winnett-Murray (biology).
          Several members of the music faculty were honored
  for accomplishments as performing artists:  Mihai
  Craioveanu, Margaret Kennedy-Dygas, Huw Lewis, Edward
  Mallett and Jun Okada.  Members of the art faculty
  recognized for their work as artists were Bruce McCombs and
  Steve Nelson.  Honored as coaches were:  Donna Eaton
  (women's golf), Stuart Fritz (baseball), Maureen Odland
  (volleyball), Karen Page (women's tennis), John Patnott
  (women's swimming) and Glenn Van Wieren (men's basketball).
          Faculty honored for serving as officers of
  professional organizations included:  Wes Ball (music),
  Donald Cronkite (biology), Lynn Japinga (religion), Huw
  Lewis (music), Allen Verhey (religion) and Larry Wagenaar
  (Joint Archives of Holland).
          Recognized for receiving honors and awards were:
  Matthew Elrod (chemistry), David Ryden (political science),
  Deborah Sturtevant (sociology and social work), Elliot Tanis
  (mathematics), Allen Verhey (religion), Leslie Wessman
  (education) and Kathy Winnett-Murray (biology).
          Several faculty members and academic programs were
  recognized as recipients of grants and fellowships,
  including:  the department of chemistry, Herb Dershem
  (computer science), Paul DeYoung (physics and engineering),
  Matthew Elrod (chemistry), Lee Forester (modern and
  classical languages), Janis Gibbs (history), Peter Gonthier
  (physics and engineering) and Peter Jolivette (physics and
  engineering).
          Also recognized for receiving grants and
  fellowships were:  John Krupczak (physics and engineering),
  Catherine Mader (physics and engineering), Greg Murray
  (biology), the natural sciences division, Graham Peaslee
  (chemistry)  Tim Pennings (mathematics), David Ryden
  (political science), Carol Simon (philosophy), Gisela
  Strand-Hales (modern and classical languages), Jack Wilson
  (art), Kathy Winnett-Murray (biology) and Charlotte van Oyen
  Witvliet (psychology).
