The Flying Dutch kept their place among the nation's leading
small college women's swimming and diving programs by finishing
fifth at the NCAA Division III championships.

Coach John Patnott's Flying Dutch recorded 10 All-America
performances in totaling 218 points. It marks the fourth time in
five years that the Dutch have finished fifth at the national
meet. Hope has been a top ten team for nine consecutive years.

Junior Erinn Van Auken (Holland West Ottawa HS) achieved All-
America distinction in three individual events and as the
freestyle anchor in four relays. She was the bronze medalist in
the 200-yard freestyle. Noteworthy was the fact that her school-
record time of 1:52.58 erased a 1988 Hope mark by national
champion Shelly Russell. Van Auken also set a school record in
finishing fifth in the 100-yard freestyle (:52.08) and for the
second straight year was sixth in the 50-yard freestyle (:24.07).

Sophomore Betsy VandenBerg (Beverly Hills Southfield Christian
HS) finished as the silver medalist in the 200-yard breaststroke
for the second consecutive year posting a school-record time
(2:19.42). She was also an All-American in finishing seventh in
the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.54) and ended tenth in the
100-yard breaststroke (1:06.17).

Senior diver Kari Jackson (Plymouth-Canton HS) won All-America
honors on the one-meter board finishing fifth with 369.15 points.
She also was 16th on the three-meter board with 360.10 points.

Junior Llena Durante (Chicago Whitney Young HS) finished tenth in
the 100-yard butterfly (:58.67) and was 16th in the 50-yard
freestyle (:24.31).

The Dutch ended four-for-four in All-America relay efforts. The
best performance was third place in the 400-yard medley relay
(3:56.75) with a team of junior Colleen Doyle (Rochester Hills
Marian HS), VandenBerg, Durante and Van Auken. It marked the
eighth consecutive year that Hope's 400-yard medley relay team
has been All-American. The 200-yard medley relay team of Doyle,
VandenBerg, Durante and Van Auken finished fourth in 1:47.71.

The Dutch opened and closed the meet with All-America efforts.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Durante, freshman Jenna
Anderson (Cincinnati Anderson HS), freshman Liz Vanderveen
(Holland Christian HS) and Van Auken finished fifth (1:37.20)
while the 400-yard freestyle team was sixth (3:33.94) with a team
of Durante, VandenBerg, Anderson and Van Auken. The 200-yard
freestyle relay has been All-American eight consecutive years.
