Hope College will be represented in both NCAA
golf championship tournaments.
Junior Ellen Colenbrander of Holland (Holland HS) will play
in the Division II/III women's championships from May 12-15 in
Orlando, Florida while freshman Eric Wohlfield of Brighton
(Brighton HS) will compete in the Division III men's championship
from May 17-20 in Williamstown, Mass.
It marks the first time in school history that Hope has
qualified a golfer in both the men's and women's national
tournaments in the same year.
Colenbrander and Wohlfield were the medalists in their
respective Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA)
sports last fall.
Colenbrander will be returning to the national tournament
for the third straight year. She is one of 36 Division III
golfers who will compete in the four-day, 72-hole tournament from
May 12-15 at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort in Orlando,
Fla. There will also be 27 golfers from NCAA Division II
colleges. Colenbrander is one of 13 individual golfers invited
to the tournament. The rest of the field is comprised of golfers
from 10 teams.
A year ago Colenbrander achieved All-America designation as
she finished seventh at nationals averaging 79 strokes per round.
As a freshman she finished 53rd at nationals on the same Orlando,
Fla. course where she'll be competing this year.
Colenbrander has been the MIAA medalist twice in her career
(1996 and 1998). Last fall

she averaged 80.8 strokes per 18-hole round in conference
tournaments. She will be accompanied by coach Donna Eaton who
guided the Flying Dutch to the MIAA championship in her first
season.
Wohlfield is being rewarded for an outstanding first
collegiate year which saw him win medalist honors in the Michigan
Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) in record fashion.
He is one of just five individual golfers invited to compete
in the four-day, 72-hole tournament at the Taconic Golf Club in
Williamstown, Mass. There will also be golfers representing 23
colleges, including MIAA champion Olivet which a year ago
finished seventh at nationals.
Over 13 tournaments during the fall and spring seasons
Wohlfield averaged 75.1 strokes per 18-hole round. He
established an MIAA record by averaging 72.4 strokes over eight
conference tournaments. The picture of consistency, he was the
league tournament medalist only twice, but never shot over 76 and
three times had rounds of 70. This spring he was the medalist in
two tournaments.
Wohlfield is the first Hope male golfer to qualify for the
NCAA championship since 1994 when Frank Gauntt finished 51st in
the 120-player field. Hope also qualified teams in 1987 and
1988.
Coach Bob Ebels, who has guided the men's golf program since
1991, will accompany Wohlfield to the NCAA tournament.
