Hope College will send three athletes to the NCAA
Division III women's track and field championships beginning
Thursday (May 20) at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio.
Sophomore Emily Sowers of Grand Rapids (GR Christian HS) has
qualified in the discus for the second year in-a-row. The Hope
and MIAA record holder in the event, Sowers is seeded eighth
among 26 qualifiers with a throw of 145 feet, 9 inches. A year
ago she was 15th at nationals in the discus. The discus
competition will be Saturday.
Junior Jennifer Ernst of Westerville, Ohio (Westerville
South HS) has qualified in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters/ She is
seeded 11th among 32 qualifiers in the 5K (17:40.24) and 19th
among 27 qualifiers in the 10K (37:42.44).
Senior Becky Timmer of Pella, Iowa (Pella Community HS) is
seeded 29th (18:01.74) in the 5K. Last fall she was an NCAA All-
American in cross country finishing 19th in a field of 180
runners at the national meet. The 10,000 meter race will be
