A total of 126 Hope College students have been named to the
Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Academic Honor Roll
for the 1998-99 school year.

The MIAA each year honors students at MIAA member collges who
achieve in both the classroom and in athletic competition.

A student needed to be a letterwinner in a varsity sport and
maintain at least a 3.5 grade point average for the entire
school year.

Three Hope students had the distinction of being named to the
Honor Roll four consecutive years. They are Dave DeHommel (football)
of Jenison, Mich., Adam Paarlberg (football) of Alto, Mich., and
Elizabeth Yared (golf) of Grand Rapids.

    The food service programs at Calvin College and Hope College have each received recognition in the 26th annual Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards Contest of the National Association of College & University Food Services (NACUFS).

  2. NCAA Honors Two As Scholars

      Two recent Hope College graduates, Becky Schmidtof Holland and Becky Timmer of Pella, Iowa, have been awarded theprestigious postgraduate scholarship by the National CollegiateAthletic Association (NCAA).     The program honors outstanding student-athletes from NCAAmember institutions who are also outstanding scholars.  Thescholarship is presented annually to a select group of 174student-athletes across every NCAA division and in all sports. The $5,000 scholarships are to be used by recipients to furthertheir education after college graduation.     A kinesiology major, Schmidt became Hope's first NCAADivision III volleyball All-American.  She played on threeMichigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) championshipteams and competed in the NCAA tournament twice.  She was votedthe most valuable player in the MIAA as both a junior and senior. A 1994 graduate of Holland High School, she is the daughter ofDr. John Schmidt of Holland and Sara and Dr. Boyd Wilson ofHolland.  She will pursue a master's degree in sport performanceand behavior at Miami University of Ohio.     A chemistry and Spanish major, Timmer was standout crosscountry and track athlete.  She was a two-time NCAA Division IIIAll-American in cross country and was also recently named a GTEAcademic All-American.  A 1995 graduate of Pella Community HighSchool, she is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. David Timmer ofPella, Iowa.  She has been accepted into the Medical ScientistTraining Program at the University of Iowa.     These awards bring to 11 the number of Hope PostgraduateScholars dating back to 1974.
