Both the Hope Flying Dutchmen and the DePauw Tigers will be seeking their first football victory of the season Saturday in the renewal of what has become a very competitive rivalry.
Kickoff for the game in Greencastle, Ind. will be 1:30 p.m. CDT (2:30 p.m. in Michigan).
The game will be broadcast by WHTC-AM (1450) and WFUR-FM (102.9). The WHTC broadcast can also be heard on the internet (http: www.hope.edu).
Entering its sixth decade, this series is dead even. Since their first meeting in 1951, each team has won 15 times. Over the past decade each team has five victories. Hope is 8-7 in games played in Holland; DePauw is exactly the same in Greencastle. A year ago DePauw won in Holland 27-21; Hope prevailed in Indiana 20-10 in 1998.
"It's become a great rivalry between two schools with great football traditions," said coach Dean Kreps. "This is a game we look forward to playing every year."
The Flying Dutchmen will be seeking to bounce-back from a season-opening 20-7 loss to Valparaiso. DePauw, meanwhile, will be after its first win after suffering two losses, 17-12 to Rhodes, Tenn. and 24-21 to Hanover, Ind.
Sophomore linebacker Matt Bride of Petoskey (Petoskey HS) was voted the MIAA's defensive player of the week. He was credited with 16 tackles against Valparaiso, nine of them solos. They included a quarterback sack and another for lost yardage.
Senior wide receiver Brian Adloff of East Grand Rapids (EGR HS) continues to close-in on the Hope career mark for pass receptions. He caught four passes against Valparaiso to raise his career total to 96. The Hope career record is 107 catches by Bill Vanderbilt, Jr. from 1984-87.
The Flying Dutchmen return to Holland Municipal Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 23 entertaining Wheaton for homecoming.
