Co-written by Rainer and her director Heidi Rose
Robbins, "Baring Fruit" explores the life of Paula
Modersohn-Becker, a radical German painter who lived at the
turn of the century. Using actual letters and journal
articles, Robbins and Rainer have crafted the story of
Modersohn-Becker's life, capturing her struggle to reconcile
her bold artistic aspirations with her desire for a rich and
fulfilling family life.

Her paintings were on the cutting edge of
Expressionism, utilizing light and color in ways not seen
before. As a female artist in a world dominated by men,
Modersohn-Becker had to be particularly brilliant to achieve
recognition--and achieve it she did. The play incorporates
much of her artwork as a visual backdrop to the production's
action.

Elizabeth Rainer has performed with Hope Summer
Repertory Theatre in roles such as Luisa in "A Shayna
Maidel," Cecily in "The Importance of Being Earnest," Viola
in "Twelfth Night" and the title role in "Peter Pan." Heidi
Rose Robbins directs, acts and teaches throughout the United
States and abroad, and for the past four years has served as
director of Shakespeare and associate chair of theatre at
the Interlochen Arts Camp.

The DeWitt Center is located on Columbia Avenue at
12th Street. The performance is sponsored by the college's
Cultural Affairs Committee, Department of Theatre,
Department of Art, and Department of Modern and Classical
Languages.
