The Hope College Department of Music
and Meyer Music of Holland are joining together to offer a
free piano workshop to area piano instructors.
Nancy and Randall Faber, both leaders in piano
instruction, will lead the workshop on Saturday, Sept. 9,
from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Wichers Auditorium of Nykerk
Hall of Music on the Hope campus.
The program begins with a workshop on "The
Elementary Student: Fostering a Love of Music," from 9 a.m.
to 10:30 a.m. At 10:45 a.m., the Fabers will turn their
attention to older students with "The Intermediate Student:
the ABCs of Artistry," which will end at noon. The final
session runs from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., and is titled
"Piano Adventures: Get Ready for Take-Off."
Educators may attend all the events, or attend
just those of interest. There is no registration required
prior to the workshop.
Nykerk Hall of Music is located in the center of
the Hope campus, along the former 12th Street between
College and Columbia avenues.
Nancy and Randall Faber have combined their
background as composer and performer to become one of
today's leading supporters of the piano teacher. The
husband and wife team has authored more than 80
publications, including the best-selling "Pre Time" to
"Bigtime Piano Supplementary Library" and the highly
successful method "Piano Adventures."
The Fabers advocate piano study not only for
personal expression and performance success, but also as a
vehicle for the student's creative and cognitive
development. Their philosophy is reflected in their
writing, their public appearances and in their own teaching.
Nancy Faber was named the 1997 MTNA-Shepherd
Distinguished Composer of the Year for her piece "Tennessee
Suite" for Piano and String Quartet. Other commissions
include the flute quartet "Voices from Between Worlds,"
winner of the 1994 National Flute Association's Professional
Chamber Music Competition; a commission by "Clavier"
magazine; and the Michigan Music Teacher's Distinguished
Composer Award. Her music has been heard on network
television and on public radio. Her teachers of composition
include Jean Tower, William Albright and British composer
Nicholas Maw; her piano studies were at the Eastman School
and Michigan State University.
Randall Faber has performed and given workshops
throughout the United States. He has been Artist-in-
Residence at Bard College and a guest faculty member at the
National Piano Institute at Southern Methodist University.
He holds three degrees from the University of Michigan, with
advance studies in both piano performance and educational
psychology.
