The Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports Medicine at Hope College will examine the causes and treatment of asthma in athletes on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. in the Maas Center.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
The address, "The Asthmatic Athlete," will be delivered by Dr. Jeff Kovan, DO, who is director of sports medicine at Michigan State University. According Kovan, asthma affects some 10 million people in the United States.He noted that exercise can trigger an asthma attack, and that some 10 to 20 percent of all athletes suffer with the symptoms of exercise induced asthma (EIA). Kovan's talk will review asthma and EIA, and will discuss options for managing the affliction.
In addition to serving as director of sports medicine at Michigan State University, Kovan is also an assistant professor in the Department of Family Practice at the university. He also directs the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program at the university and the Family Practice Residency at St. Lawrence Hospital in Lansing. He is a graduate of the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University.
The Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports Medicine is designed for health care professionals with an interest in physically active patients, and is intended for students, educators and clinicians alike. It is co- sponsored by Holland Community Hospital, GRSportsCenter and the college.
