The Hope College Visiting Writers Series will hosts Kaye Gibbons on Friday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. at the Knickerbocker Theatre.
The Hope College Jazz Ensemble will play prior to
the reading, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
Gibbons is native to Nash County, N.C., and
attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
There she wrote her debut novel, "Ellen Foster," an instant
literary success and the recipient of the Sue Kaufman Prize
for First Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and
Letters.
Gibbons has also published "A Virtuous Woman," "A
Cure for Dreams," "Charms for the Easy Life," "Sights
Unseen" and "On the Occasion of My Last Afternoon."
In 1997, "Ellen Foster" and "A Virtuous Woman"
were both selected for the Oprah Winfrey Book Club. Gibbons
has also won the PEN Revson Award for the best work of
fiction published by a writer under 35, the Heartland Prize
for Fiction from the "Chicago Tribune," and the North
Carolina Sir Walter Raleigh Award.
Among others, Eudora Welty and Walker Percy have
praised her strong and poignant Southern voice. "Time" has
called her writing "Graceful and spirited--as invigorating
as sarsaparilla and as soothing as lemon-balm tea."
The Knickerbocker Theatre is located at 86 East
