Teams and individual students took home honors following the 28th annual Albert E. Lampen Mathematics Contest and Conference, held at Hope College on Saturday, Nov. 18.
The contest consists of a 30-question, multiple
choice test administered in a 90-minute time span. More
than 100 high school-level students from 13 schools
participated.
Winning teams in class A, B, C and D, and the
overall top team, were determined by adding the scores of
each school's top four individual scorers. In addition,
first- through 10th-place prizes were awarded to the top
individual students.
The Kalamazoo Area Math and Science Center was
recognized for the overall highest team total. Grand Rapids
Christian High School was the top team in Class A, Catholic
Central High School in Grand Rapids was the top team in
Class B, Shelby High School was the top team in Class C and
Western Michigan Christian High School of Muskegon was the
top team in Class D.
In the individual competition, Allan Bickle of the
Kalamazoo Area Math and Science Center won first place. In
a three-way tie for second place were Jordan Marcusse of
West Ottawa High School, Kurt Pyle of Zeeland High School
and Ryan Rindler of the Kalamazoo Area Math and Science
Center.
Tied for fifth place were Ben Briggs of Catholic
Central High School, Jeff Dean of the Kalamazoo Area Math
and Science Center and John Engberg of Grand Rapids
Christian High School. Tied for eighth place were Bryan
Code of Williamston High School and Andy Jacks of Black
River Public School. Malini Daniel of the Kalamazoo Area
Math and Science Center won 10th place.
Each of the four winning teams, the grand prize
team and all of the top-10 scorers received a framed
certificate. The top student from each school also received
a prize.
While the students participated in the contest,
their teachers attended a conference on campus.
