When Hope College students hit the stage for fast-
paced, musical spectacular, those attending will hear
everything from a percussion ensemble to the Chapel Choir. 
But very little clapping.

In the tradition of the quick-moving musical
event, audience members are asked to hold their applause
until intermission and the end of the performance. As the
last strains of a string quartet fade out, the lights come
up on another part of stage to feature a jazz ensemble. 
Highlights from the Opera Workshop lead into a piano solo,
and musical theatre blends into the Wind Symphony.

The 8 p.m. concert, being held in Grand Rapids for
a 13th year, unveils the gifts of all Hope College's major
musical groups, along with soloists, chamber groups, and
small ensembles. The 24 works performed range from a
selection from a Brahms' symphony, to the jazz of Ornette
Colmeman, Romanian dances by Bela Bartok, and a cello piece
by Paul Hindemith.

The evening opens with "Ku-Ka-Ilimoku," a
percussion piece by Christopher Rouse and performed by the
Percussion Ensemble. A quick shift features soprano Sarah
Proulx, a junior from Ionia, accompanied by pianist Laura
Donnelly, a senior from Holland, performing "Father, I Beg
You" from Moliere's "Tartuffe."

The Women's Chamber Choir, directed by Brad
Richmond, performs "She Piped for Us," by Libby Larson. A
string quartet--consisting of violist Paul Jackson, a junior
from Cedar Rapids, Iowa; violinist Ben Fuhrman, a freshman
from Lansing; violist Joe Gutowski, a freshman from
Muskegon; and cellist Christopher Meyer, a senior from
Holland--will perform Shostakovich's "Quartet No. 8, Allegro
molto."

Jazz Ensemble I, under the direction of Brian
Coyle, will play Charles Mingus' "Haitian Fight Song." 
Sophomore violinist Joseph Deller of Dearborn will be joined
by pianist Lora Clark, a 1997 Hope graduate, in Edouard
Lalo's "Symphonie Espagnole: Scherzando." Next, senior
organist Krista Shinew of Holland performs "Sonata in B-flat
Major" by L.J.A. Lefebure-Wely.

The Opera Workshop performs a selection from
Engelbert Humperdinck's "Hansel und Gretel," under the
direction of Margaret Kennedy-Dygas. Next, pianist Paul
Jacobs, a senior from Grand Haven, performs Alexander
Scriabin's "Prelude in B Minor." The first half closes with
the Hope College Orchestra, under the direction of Richmond,
performing Brahms's "Symphony No. 2 in D Major: Allegro con
spirito."

Richard Piippo conducts the Symphonette in
Benjamin Britten's "Soirees Musicales: March, Canzonetta,
Bolero, Canzonetta" to open the second half of the
performance.

Next, soprano Melissa Kuchek, a junior from
Holland, accompanied by piainist Laura Donnelly, sings
Giacomo Rossini's "La Separazione." Bela Bartok's
"Roumanian Dances" will be performed by violinist Titus
Munteanu, a freshman from Romania, accompanied by pianist
Lora Clark.

The Chapel Choir, directed by Richmond, will sing
"Jesus Walked this Lonesome Valley," as arranged by John
Reager. Following is flutist Jessica Schulte, a junior from
Clarkston, with pianist Sarah Herman, a senior for Sylvania,
Ohio, performing Eldin Burton's "Sonata for Flute and Piano:
Andatino."

Next, a string quartet--consisting of violinist
Jennifer Walvoord, a junior from Holland; violinist Joseph
Deller; violist Lauren Kruse, a junior from Holland; and
cellist Nicholas Toben, a sophomore from Troy--will perform
Debussy's "Quartet in G Minor, Op. 10: Assez vif et bien
rytme."

A jazz quartet, the Jazz Chamber Ensemble I, takes
the stage next with Ornette Coleman's "Blues Connotation." 
Featured in the ensemble is alto saxophonist Daron Vroon, a
senior from Jacksonville, Fla.; bassist Hart Gary, a senior
from Charlottesville, Va.; trombonist Paul Wesselink, a
freshman from Grand Rapids; and drummer Mike Kopchick, also
a freshman from Grand Rapids.

Pianist Susan DeKam, a junior from Caledonia,
performs Rachmaninoff's "Prelude in A Minor, Op. 32, No. 8,"
followed by the Wind Symphony Chamber Players, under the
direction of Steven Ward, performing Charles Surinach's
"Garrotin ('Ritmo Jondo')."

Senior cellist Brandon Cota of Frederick, Md., is
next with Paul Hindemith's "Sonata for Violincello: Massig
schnell." He is followed by a trio of seniors--violist
Aimee Morehouse of Bowie, Md.; clarinetist Tracy Miller of
Gurnee, Ill.; and pianist Paul Jacobs--performing "Suite,
Op. 157b: Introduction et Final" by Darius Milhaud.

Junior Quincy Marr, a tenor from Gridley, Ill.,
with pianist Lora Clark, will perform "Empty Chairs and
Empty Tables" from "Les Miserables."

The concert concludes with the Wind Symphony
performing Leonard Bernstein?s "Profanation" ("Jeremiah
Symphony") under the direction of Ward.

Tickets for the showcase are $10 each, and may be
purchased through the Office of Public Relations at Hope
College. The office, open from 8 a.m. to noon, and 1 p.m. to
5 p.m. Monday through Friday, is located on the second floor
of the DeWitt Center and may be called at (616) 395-7860.

Tickets may also be purchased over the counter at
the Grand Center Ticket Office for $10 each. The Grand
Center Ticket Office is open Monday through Friday from 10
a.m. to 6 p.m.

In addition, tickets may be ordered by phone, and
charged to any major credit card, through Ticketmaster by
calling (616) 456-3333. A service fee is added to the cost
of each ticket purchased this way.
