Dr. Mary C. Hill of the U.S. Geological
Survey in Boulder, Colo., will examine the calibration and
testing of models on Wednesday, April 18, at 4 p.m. at Hope
College in room 220 of the Peale Science Center.

The public is invited. Admission is free.

Her address, "Guidelines for Effective Model
Calibration (Any Model!)," will explore how nonlinear
regression and associated statistics can be used to
dramatically improve how data are used to calibrate and test
models.

Hill is a 1976 Hope graduate, and received MSE and
Ph.D. degrees in civil engineering from Princeton
University. She is the author of MODFLOPWP, the popular
PCG2 solver for MODFLOW.

She is presenting the 2001 Darcy Distinguished
Lecture of the college's department of geological and
environmental sciences. The event is sponsored by the
Association of Ground Water Scientists and Engineers of the
National Ground Water Association.

Peale Science Center is located on College Avenue
at 12th Street. Refreshments will be served during the
talk.
