The Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports Medicine of Hope College will examine "The Vegetarian Athlete" on Thursday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. in the college's Maas Center, located on Columbia Avenue at 11th Street.

The Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports Medicine of Hope College will examine "The Vegetarian Athlete" on Thursday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. in the college's Maas Center, located on Columbia Avenue at 11th Street.

The public is invited. Admission is free.

The address will be presented by Dr. Debra Vinci of Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. She will review types of vegetarianism, which range from diets that include meat to diets that include only certain fruits or vegetables. Vinci will review the importance of planning to insure a balanced vegetarian diet that is high in carbohydrates, provides adequate protein to meet the increased needs of athletes and is low in fat.

Vinci is an assistant professor in the Department of Health, Leisure and Exercise Science at Appalachian State University. She holds a doctorate in health education from Loma Linda University, and had a number of experiences in both health education and nutrition in the Pacific Northwest before taking her present position in North Carolina. She has published or made more than 40 presentations on subjects related to athletic nutrition.

The Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports Medicine is designed for health care professionals with an interest in physically active patients, and is intended for students, educators and clinicians alike. It is co- sponsored by Holland Community Hospital, GRSportsCenter and the college.
