A world premiere of music for clarinet and bassoon will highlight the Hope College department of music's Faculty Recital on Sunday, Jan. 27, at 4 p.m. in Wichers Auditorium of Nykerk Hall of Music.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
The recital features the world premiere performance of Robert Brownlow's "Five Movements for Clarinet and Bassoon." Clarinetist Kristen Ward and her husband, bassoonist Steven Ward, will perform the piece, which they were responsible for commissioning. Support for the new work was provided by the Cultural Affairs Committee of Hope College, which supports a wide range of artistic experiences throughout the year.
Featuring mostly modern music, the recital also includes Paul Hindemith's "Sonata for Alto Saxophone" performed by Ryan Janus. In addition, two works for an unusual collaboration of cello, piano and soprano, by composer and conductor Andre Previn, will be performed by cellist Richard Piippo, pianist Jennifer Wolfe, and soprano Linda Dykstra.
The recital concludes with the Romantic tradition, with Johannes Brahms' "Sonata in E minor for Piano and Cello, Opus 38" as performed by Piippo and pianist Charles Aschbrenner.
Nykerk Hall of Music is located in the middle of the Hope campus, between College and Columbia avenues along the former 12th Street.
The Jan. 27 event is the second of six recitals to be given by members of the Hope faculty throughout the winter and spring of 2002. The series will continue on Sunday, Feb. 17, at 4 p.m.; Sunday, March 10, at 4 p.m.; Tuesday, March 12, at 8 p.m.; and Sunday, April 7, at 4 p.m. The March 12 recital will be in Dimnent Memorial Chapel; the other concerts will be presented in Wichers Auditorium of Nykerk Hall of Music.
