They are five voices from the Netherlands with a unique sound and name, and although Quink appeared in Holland once before, most residents may not recognize the renowned vocal quintet this time.

First, that concert occurred at a Tulip Time event more than 20 years ago. Second, that young quintet has grown into one of the top classical vocal ensembles in the world.

Hope College is welcoming back Quink for the group's 250th appearance in the United States, with a concert on Monday, Feb. 18, at 8 p.m. at St. Francis de Sales Church.

The "New York Times" has described the quintet's sound as "elegant phrasing, impeccable intonation and a purity of tone reminiscent of Renaissance madrigals."

Quink's 11 recordings have ranged from a cappella music of the Renaissance and Baroque as well as works by Romantic composers. Moreover, the ensemble often performs folk song and close harmony arrangements.

Holland residents will get a unique experience when Quink performs an all-Dutch program. Selections will range from work by the 17th century composer J.P. Sweelinck to Dutch folk songs.

The group is well known for its live performances, and never fails to include a mix of serious and lighter music for the audience. "They delivered an astonishing array of music with expert vocal technique, a finely calibrated sense of ensemble balance and an infectious sense of musical fun," said a reviewer for Cleveland's "Plain Dealer."

Although Hope could have hosted Quink on campus, Derek Emerson, the college's arts coordinator, said the decision to have the event at St. Francis de Sales was easy.

"The acoustics at St. Francis are outstanding, as we heard last year when we had Anonymous 4 perform there," he said. "Plus, we enjoy working with the people at St. Francis and finding new ways to reach out to the community."

Tickets for the concert are available through the theatre lobby ticket office in the DeWitt Center, which can be called at (616) 395-7890. Tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for children under 18.

St. Francis de Sales Church is located on the corner of 13th Street and Maple Avenue in Holland.
