Hope College basketball players Laura Poppema of Holland, Mich. (Holland HS) and Don Overbeek of Wyoming, Mich. (Calvin Christian HS) have been named to the Academic/Athletic Honor Teams of the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM).

Each year the coaches association plays tribute to five outstanding scholar-athletes from Michigan colleges and universities at every level. To be eligible, players have to be either a starter or important reserve and maintain at least a 3.2 grade point average on a four point scale.

A senior, Laura Poppema maintained a 3.68 grade point average while majoring in kinesiology. She was co-captain of the team which won the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) championship and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Division III tournament finishing with a 27-3 record. She was voted to the All-MIAA first team as both a junior and senior. This season she averaged 12 points and eight rebounds a game. She has worked with Holland city youth for three years, along with volunteering for the Holland recreation program. She is also an active participant in the school's chapel program.

A junior, Don Overbeek is a two-time all-MIAA first team honoree and this past season received second team all-region recognition from the National Association of Basketball Coaches. The Flying Dutchmen captured the MIAA tournament to gain a berth in the NCAA Division III championships, advancing to the second round. Overbeek averaged 14.1 points, 87. rebounds and three blocked shots a game. A double major in religion and philosophy, he maintains a 3.3 grade point average. He is a volunteer at the Holland Rescue Mission, has been on three work-study trips since he enrolled at Hope and served as a resident advisor in his residence hall.

Joining Poppema on the women's honor team are LeeAnn Bies of the University of Michigan, Marisa Dellangelo of Northern Michigan University, Alice Duesing of Lake Superior University and Sarah Judd of Oakland University.

Overbeek is joined on the men's honor team by Brad Buddenborg of Oakland University, Damian Matacz of Northern Michigan University, Andrew Neidlinger of Albion College and Mark Zichterman of Cornerstone University.
