Awards as the outstanding senior athletes amongHope College graduates in the class of 2002 were presented to twostudents during the college's Honors Convocation on Thursday(April 25).

Awards as the outstanding senior athletes amongHope College graduates in the class of 2002 were presented to twostudents during the college's Honors Convocation on Thursday(April 25).

Amy Brower of Hamilton was presented the John Schouten Awardwhile Joshua Boss of Jenison is the recipient of the Otto van derVelde All-Campus Award.

The Schouten award is given to a senior woman who, inaddition to excelling in athletics, possess other strongcharacter traits and leadership abilities. The award is named inmemory of John "Jack" Schouten who was a long-time physicaleducator and coach at Hope, in addition to serving as thecollege's first director of athletics.

The van der Velde award is presented to a senior man foroutstanding contribution to the college in athletics, scholarshipand participation in student activities. The award, presentedannually since 1932, is named in memory of Dr. Otto van derVelde, a 1915 Hope College graduate who lettered in four sportsand was later a team physician for more than 40 years.

A special education major, Brower was captain of both thevolleyball and basketball teams. She achieved All-MIAA honorsfor two years in volleyball. She achieved Dean's Listrecognition all four years and was a four-time MIAA AcademicHonor Roll honoree. She was also named the 2001 recipient of theAlvin W. Vanderbush Student-Athlete Award. A 1997 graduate of Hamilton High School, she is the daughter of Mr. andMrs. Randy (Cyndy) Brower of Hamilton.

A business major, Boss was a national champion breaststrokeswimmer. He became just the sixth swimmer in NCAA Division IIIhistory to win a national championship in the same event fourconsecutive years, capturing the 200-yard from his freshmanthrough senior year. He also won the national title in the 100-yard breaststroke three of his four years. He ended his careeran NCAA All-American 17 times. A 1998 graduate of Jenison HighSchool, he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Randy (Deb) Boss ofJenison.
