Hailed by critics as a performer to watch, singer-songwriter Meghan Cary will be performing at Hope College's Knickerbocker Theatre on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 8 p.m.
"Billboard Magazine" compared Cary's initial release to the Indigo Girls and Shawn Colvin, saying "perhaps the best thing about Cary is that she's neither superficial nor obnoxiously self-possessed."
The guitarist and vocalist carries with her more inspiration than most. Her music career began in 1993 with Matthew Black, and the two were soon engaged to be married. But Black died unexpectedly two years later, and Cary decided to pick up his guitar and keep playing.
"I knew he wouldn't want me to give up the dream," Cary said. "I wrote music because it was the only way I found to survive the greatest loss in my life to date."
Her debut CD, "New Shoes," was awarded the "Critic's Choice" tag by "Billboard," and her newest release, "Onion Dream," is receiving rave reviews.
Critic Barry Fox has said, "Cary is a start waiting to happen."
The online publication, "The Global Muse," has said, "in a time when the corporate music world continues to serve up cookie-cutter artists... it's gratifying to have an artist like Meghan Cary around."
Cary is also an actor, receiving her B.A. in theatre from Duke University, and her M.F.A. in acting at Florida State University's Asolo Conservatory. She has performed in more than 50 plays throughout the United States and Europe while simultaneously working in film, television and radio.
Tickets will be sold at the door, and cost $7 for the general public, and $5 for Hope College students.
The Knickerbocker Theatre is located in downtown Holland at 86 E. 8th St.
