The Hope College Wind Symphony will open its year with a special concert featuring two guest artists on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 8 p.m. in Dimnent Memorial Chapel.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
Daniel Mattson, instructor of low brass at Hope College and assistant principal trombonist of the Grand Rapids Symphony, will perform the newly composed "Illuminations" for trombone and wind symphony by Joseph Turrin. Hope College participated in a consortium of universities to commission the work, written for Joseph Alessi, principal trombonist of the New York Philharmonic.
Dr. Wesley Broadnax, assistant director of bands at Michigan State University, will conduct "Trauersinfonie" by Richard Wagner. Wagner composed the work as funeral music that was played while the remains of the great German composer Carl Maria von Weber were processed around Leipzig.
Other works on the concert include music by Frank Ticheli, Alberto Ginastera, and the "First Suite in E-flat" by Gustav Holst.
Dimnent Memorial Chapel is located on College Avenue at 12th Street.
