Hope College will present renowned French horn player Thomas Bacon and a choir of horns on Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 8 p.m. in Dimnent Memorial Chapel.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
Bacon will be performing a "Concert of the Spirit: A Service of Music and Reflection," which features inspirational music including works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Karl Stiegler, and Luigi Cherbubini.
Joining Bacon will be Hope faculty member and pianist Jennifer Wolfe, as well as 11 members of the West Michigan Horn Choir, which includes musicians from the Grand Rapids, West Shore, and Holland symphonies.
Bacon has held principal positions with the Detroit Symphony, the Berlin Radio Symphony, and the Houston Symphony. He is a member of Summit Brass, the St. Louis Brass Quintet, The Golden Horn and Opus 90, and performs worldwide as a soloist, chamber musician and recording artist.
He has nine solo recordings in additional to dozens of other collaborations, and has had more than 50 new pieces composed for him by a variety of composers. He was also featured in Michael Meckna's book, "Twentieth Century Brass Soloists."
The program includes prelude and postlude, hymns, prayers, congregational singing, moments of reflection, and a message, all delivered through music. Bacon will also introduce the pieces and provide short inspirational readings from the Bible and from spiritual leaders.
Bacon is a Yamaha Performing Artist, and Yamaha and Meyer Music House are cosponsoring the performance, as well as a workshop for high school and college French horn players on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
Dimnent Memorial Chapel is located on College Avenue at 12th Street.
