Awards for scholastic achievement and service have been presented to graduating Hope College seniors and recent graduates.

The awards honor students for achievement in specific areas of study and service. The students were recognized during the college's annual Honors Convocation on Thursday, April 22.

The Academy of American Poets Award was presented to Laura S. Jensen of Manistee and Amanda A. Dykstra of Holland. Anne Marcus of Holland received the American Association of University Women Award.

The M. Harold Mikle Prize for Communication was presented to Krystal A. Beyer of Alpena, Jeremy S. Brieve of Holland and Heather L. Hahn of Valparaiso, Ind.; Lauren R. Hinkle of Indianapolis, Ind., received the Southland Medal (Gerrit H. Albers Gold Medal), which is awarded to the outstanding woman of the senior class.

The winners of the John Schouten Award for the outstanding female student-athlete were Jennifer G. Price of Battle Creek and Michelle F. Smith of Olympia, Wash. The Otto Vander Velde All-Campus Award was presented to Edward N. Huebner of Kalamazoo.

The Paul G. Fried Prize in International Education was presented to Ana X. Santibanez Zamora of San Pedro Martir, Mexico. Joseph R. Gutowski of Muskegon was honored for Music Teachers National Association Student Achievement Recognition. Technos International Prizes were awarded to Jung F. Koral of Ann Arbor and Jessica A. Patrick of Midland.

A DACOR Bacon House Foundation Fellowship was awarded to Nora T. Staal, a 2003 graduate from Rockville, Md. An NSF Graduate Fellowship was awarded to Jody A. Murray, a 2003 graduate from Grant.

Christopher R. Van Pelt of Spencer, Iowa, and Heidi S. Bender of Sturgis received the Herman Miller Art Award.

Karina C. Machado of Hudsonville received the Biology Service Award. The Patterson Memorial Prize in Biology was presented to Timothy R. Stowe of Valparaiso, Ind.

The American Institute of Chemists Award was presented to Michael J. Bury of Brighton and Justin M. Shorb of Kalamazoo. Natalie M. Hosking of Noblesville, Ind., and Matthew C. Zwier of Holland received the Hope Chemistry Senior Awards for Research. The Almon T. Godfrey Prize in Chemistry was presented to Andrew J. Huisman of Zeeland.

Jeffrey M. Seymour of Holland was presented with the Lambda Pi Eta Book Award in communication.

The Boundy Computer Science Award was received by Nathan R. Kooistra of Burnsville, Minn.; and Benjamin B. Hilldore of Holland was the winner of the Computer Science Senior Prize.

Eric A. Plewka of Whitehall was awarded the Allan C. Kinney Memorial Award, which is presented to the outstanding graduating senior majoring in economics and business administration. Jennifer L. Paulus of Midland received the Award for Outstanding Accounting Student. David M. Foster of Onekama, Donald S. Hart II of Ann Arbor, Jeffrey C. Melville of Grandville and Steve M. VanBeek of Hudsonville received the Economics, Management and Accounting Faculty Recognition Awards. Christin A. Kool of Grand Rapids received the Wall Street Journal Award.

Kristin Q. Muellner of Park Ridge, Ill., was the winner of the Marguerite E. Kinkema Special Education Award, while the winners of the Egbert Winter Education Awards were Joseph R. Gutkowski of Muskegon and Haley M. Martin of Battle Creek. Catherine Morrison '89 Senior Science Education Awards were presented to Karina C. Machado of Hudsonville and Rebecca K. Riechel of Oxford, Ohio, while the Catherine Morrison '89 Senior Math Education Award was presented to Allison K. Dowell of Holland.

The Erika Brubaker '92 Awards for Proficiency in Literature were presented to Jessica M. Gumbs of Wyoming and Megan E. Gormley Hoeksema of Dorr. The Clarence De Graaf English Awards were presented to Jason E. Kingma of Grand Rapids and Karen M. Schuen of Portage. The Sandrene Schutt Award for Proficiency in Literature was presented to Kim N. Daelhousen of Sinking Spring, Pa., and Mary Otterness of Schnectady, N.Y.

Tulip City Gem and Mineral Club Awards were presented to Heather L. Hahn of Valparaiso, Ind., and Daniel J. Halloran of Midland.

The Kent Medical Foundation Award was awarded to Sarah E. Scholten of Grand Rapids.

The Ray De Young History Prize was awarded to Jessica A. Patrick of Midland, while Todd M. Neckers of Grand Rapids received the Miles Award in Law.

Monica R. Merkley of Sarasota, Fla., received the Lawrence "Doc" Green Award in Athletic Training. Lauren S. Jensen of Manistee and Jason J. Mejeur of St. Joseph received Dorothy and Russell Siedentop Awards, presented to outstanding members of the basketball teams. Recipients of the William and Mabel Vanderbilt Sr. Family Awards in kinesiology were Andrea R. Brani of Oxford, Kyle M. Morrison of Niles, Jenna B. Rabe of Holland, Susan M. Taylor of Bath and Abby J. Timmer of Grandville.

Benjamin J. Schoettle of Zeeland and Jonathan G. Sedon of Midland received the Albert E. Lampen Mathematics Prize.

Students honored for achievement in the study of a foreign language included Kathryn A. Goetz of Collegeville, Pa., who received the Laura Alice Boyd Memorial Award in German, and Tracy M. Geukes of Bridgman was awarded the Barbara E. Geeting Memorial Award in German.

Sara J. Bolkema of Flushing and Alisa L. White of Sterling, Ill., each received Delta Omicron Senior Honor Awards and Robert W. Cavanaugh Senior Music Awards. The winner of the Roger Rietberg Chapel Choir Award was Abby L. Whitenight of Ludington. Named to the Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honorary were Naomi R. Bertram of Downers Grove, Ill., Sara J. Bolkema of Flushing, Heidi G. Dykema of Kentwood, Benjamin R. Fuhrman of Lansing, Joseph R. Gutowski of Muskegon, Emily E. Parkhurst of Lansing and Paul J. Wesselink of Grand Rapids.

The Christian Service Award in nursing was presented to Jena N. Martino of Grand Rapids. The Senior Award for Nursing was given to Cindy L. Reichert of Corunna, and the Miriam Joyce Van Eyl Award was presented to Nancy A. Smit of Shelbyville. Sigma Theta Tau nursing recognition was awarded to Diana J. Frazier of Grand Haven, Micah H. Holden of Holland, Jennifer L. Holland of Herndon, Va., Heather M. Ludwick of Newaygo, Jena N. Martino of Grand Rapids, Cindy L. Reichert of Corunna, and Nancy A. Smit of Shelbyville. The award for Excellence in Undergraduate Nursing Student Performance was presented to Cindy L. Reichert of Corunna.

The Charles E. Lake Memorial Prize in Philosophy was presented to Leslie A. Colburn of Battle Creek and Kathryn A. Goetz of Collegeville, Pa.

The Douwe B. Yntema Prizes in physics and engineering were awarded to John C. Siehling of Zeeland and Amanda J. DeYoung of Holland.

Recipients of the James Dyke van Putten Political Science Prizes were Catherine E. Jones of Canton, Daniel P. Meeuwsen of Zeeland, Jonathan G. Sedon of Midland and Sarah A. Wilkinson of Dowagiac.

Caryn L. Bladt of Vicksburg, received the Biblical Studies Award, while Phillip A. Pratt of Flint was presented with the Sloan-Stegeman Mission Prize. Laura E. Nordheim of Mt. Pleasant and Emily J. Zeig of Sterling Heights were awarded the John Richard Vander Wilt Awards in religion.

Jeanette Gustafson Memorial Gifts in social work were presented to Theresa M. Vroon of Washington, D.C., Tesha L. Wehrmeyer of Holland and Nakisha S. Zwyghuizen of Zeeland. The Senior Sociology Award was presented to Jeffrey M. Seymour of Holland, while Peter L. Binnie of Whitewater, Wis., received the Social Work Senior Award.

The recipients of Theatre Department Senior Prizes were Megan M. Jewell of Brighton and Micah J. Maatman of Kalamazoo. Amanda J. Weener of Grand Rapids received the Brad Williams Memorial Award.
