Awards as the outstanding senior athletes among Hope College graduates in the class of 2004 were presented to three students during the college's Honors Convocation on Thursday (April 22).

 Awards as the outstanding senior athletes among Hope College graduates in the class of 2004 were presented to three students during the college's Honors Convocation on Thursday (April 22).

Edward Huebner of Portage (Portage Northern HS) was presented the Otto van der Velde All-Campus Award while Jennifer Price of Battle Creek and Michelle Smith of Olympia, Wash. were presented the John Schouten Award.

The van der Velde award is presented to a senior man for outstanding contribution to the college in athletics, scholarship and participation in student activities. The award, presented annually since 1932, is named in memory of Dr. Otto van der Velde, a 1915 Hope College graduate who lettered in four sports and was later the team physician for more than 40 years.

The Schouten award is given to a senior woman who, in addition to excelling in athletics, possess other strong character traits and leadership abilities. The award is named in memory of John "Jack" Schouten who was a long-time physical educator and coach at Hope, in addition to serving as the college's first director of athletics.

A social work and religion major, Huebner achieved All-America distinction as a four-year letterwinner in soccer. Co-captain of this year's team, he was voted the co-recipient of the conference award for contribution to team play, leadership qualities, demonstration of ethical virtues and excellence in athletics and academics. He is the son of Barbara Huebner of Kalamazoo.

A nursing major, Price achieved All-America honors as a four-year letterwinner in track. Co-captain of this year's team, she holds the Hope and conference record in the 800 meter run. She has been the honored through the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award program. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Price of Battle Creek.

An English and religion major, Smith was the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association champion four consecutive years in two distance (500 and 1,650) freestyle events. Her academic awards have included induction into Phi Beta Kappa. She is the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Gregory Smith of Olympia, Wash.
