HOLLAND - The Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports Medicine at Hope College will present three addresses during the 2004-05 school year.
The series, which will feature a variety of topics, is designed for health care professionals with an interest in physically active patients, and is intended for students, educators and clinicians alike. It is co-sponsored by Holland Community Hospital, GRSportsCenter and the college.
All three lectures begin at 7 p.m., and will be presented either at the college or at Mary Free Bed Hospital in Grand Rapids. Admission is free.
The series will open on Wednesday, Sept. 29, with "Culturally Competent Health Care" by Dr. Rene Revis Shingles of Central Michigan University. The lecture will be presented at Hope in the Maas Center, and is scheduled in conjunction with the college's 2004 Critical Issues Symposium. The symposium will examine "Race and Opportunity: Echoes of Brown v. Board of Education," and will begin the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 28, and continue through Wednesday, Sept. 29.
The second address, "Three-Dimensional Gait Analysis: Implications and Applications for Sports Pathology," will be presented by Dr. Gordon Alderink of Grand Valley State University on Monday, Oct. 11, at Mary Free Bed Hospital. The series will conclude its season on Monday, April 4, with "What Athletic Trainers Need to Know About Asthma in Their Athletes," presented by Dr. Eric Howard of Brwyn Heights, Md., at the college's Maas Center.
The Maas Center is located on Columbia Avenue at 11th Street in Holland. Mary Free Bed Hospital is located at 235 Wealthy, S.E., in Grand Rapids.
