The Hope College Visiting Writers Series will open its season with a reading by poet and essayist Carl Phillips on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. in the Knickerbocker Theatre.

The public is invited. Admission is free.

Phillips is the author of seven books of poetry, most recently "The Rest of Love," "Rock Harbor" and "The Tether," winner of the 2002 Kingesly Tufts Poetry Award.

Other books include "Coin of the Realm: Essays on the Life and Art of Poetry," and a translation of Sophocles' "Philoctetes."

Writing for the "Washington Post," poet Rita Dove described his work as "passionately austere."

A finalist for the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award, Phillips has been the recipient of numerous honors, including an Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Lamda Book Award, the Academy of American Poets Prize, and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Library of Congress. He teaches at Washington University in St. Louis.

While on campus Phillips will meet with students in several classes.

The reading will be preceded by live music by the Hope College Jazz Ensemble at 6:30 p.m.

The Knickerbocker Theatre is located at 86 East 8th Street in downtown Holland.
