An address at Hope College by State Representative Barb Vander Veen on Thursday, Sept. 29, in the college's science center will examine "Politics and Power in Nursing."
The event will begin with hors d'oeuvres at 6 p.m. in the building's atrium, with Vander Veen's presentation starting at 7 p.m. in room 1000. It is sponsored by Hope College Health Services, the college's Department of Nursing and Lakeshore NP/PA Council.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
The talk will explore the significance of politics and health policy. The discussion will consider that it is essential for nurses to become actively involved in political action to ensure appropriate decisions for the nursing profession, client care and the health care system.
A registered nurse, Vander Veen was elected to the Michigan House in 2000 to represent representatives of Ottawa County. She has served as vice chair of the House Health Policy Committee, and has also served on the Education; Family and Children Services; and Senior Health, Security and Retirement committees. She is a member of the Michigan Nurses Association, and graduate from Blodgett Memorial Hospital School of Nursing.
Those who attend the meeting and complete the conference evaluation form upon its conclusion can receive 1.2 contact hours from the AANP.
