Two members of the league championship Hope College men's soccer team have been named NCAA Division III All-Americans.
Senior forward Geoff Meyer of Grand Rapids (Forest Hills Northern HS) is a first-team honoree while senior midfielder Devin McNeil of Lansing (DeWitt HS) is a second-team selection.
The All-America program is administered by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). The program is supported by adidas.
The Flying Dutchmen captured the championship of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) this fall posting a 13-1 record. The team's 17 wins tied a Hope single season mark for victories. Coach Steve Smith's Dutchmen competed in the NCAA Division III championships.
Meyer and McNeil were co-captains of the team. Each lettered four seasons playing on three conference championship teams and achieved All-Region honors as both a junior and senior. This season Meyer was voted the most valuable player by conference coaches. He topped the MIAA in total points and tied a single season mark for assists (13). McNeil was chosen to the All-MIAA team three consecutive years. Hope's record during their career was 63-18-5 overall and 44-6-2 in the MIAA.
The latest honorees brings to 10 the number of Hope men's soccer players achieving All-America honors. Previously honored were Jett Utzinger (1992), Lee Schopp (1992 and 1993), Blake Richard (1994), Aaron Angela (1995), John Conlin (1995), Sean Toohey (1996), and Marcus Voss (2001 and 2002).
The Division III All-Americans will be honored on Saturday, Jan. 21 in Philadelphia, Pa. during the NSCAA convention.
Also named to the All-America first team was Calvin College senior defender Kurt Visker.
