Dr. Katherine Bassard of Virginia Commonwealth University will present the address "The Mind of Christ and the Life of the Mind: One Scholar's Journey" as the eighth annual Pew Faith and Learning Lecture at Hope College on Thursday, March 2, at 11 a.m. in the Maas Center auditorium.

The public is invited. Admission is free.
Bassard is a professor of English at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she has taught since 1999. She previously taught at the University of California, Berkeley, and has held visiting professorships at the University of Notre Dame and the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, Calif.
She specializes in African American literature, in particular the intersection of race, gender, religion and culture. She is the author of "Spiritual Interrogations: Culture, Gender and Community in Early African American Women's Writing" (Princeton University Press, 1999), as well as numerous articles and conference papers.
Bassard received her undergraduate degree from Wake Forest University and her doctorate from Rutgers University in 1992. She has held grants and fellowships from the Ford and Pew Foundations, as well as the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and the American Cultures Center at the University of California.
The Pew Faith and Learning Lecture is sponsored by the Pew College Society at Hope. The society exists to encourage students to pursue careers in college and university teaching as Christian service. The society was established in1997, and has 50 junior and senior members.
