Hope in the NCAA

Game Notes

The Flying Dutchmen are appearing in the NCAA Division III Championships for the 17th time, all under coach Glenn Van Wieren.  Hope also appeared in the NCAA College Division Championships twice (1958 and 1959).  Hope's first game in the Division III championships in 1982 was a 77-60 victory over Wittenberg.

Hope and Wittenberg are 3-3 in previous meetings between the schools. In games between the teams in Springfield, Ohio Hope is 2-1.  Hope has no basketball history with Mississippi College and Transylvania University.

Glenn Van Wieren was ranked the ninth winningest active Division III coach by percentage entering the 2005-06 season.  His career record over 29 seasons is 564-193 (.745).

The Flying Dutchmen went 18-0 in Hope's new DeVos Fieldhouse this season.  The main basketball gymnasium has been named in honor of longtime Hope coaches Russ DeVette and Glenn Van Wieren.  DeVette coached the Flying Dutchmen from 1948-51 and 1956-77 and Van Wieren, one of DeVette's former players, has been coach since 1977.

Hope gained the NCAA Championships by winning the MIAA conference championship.  The Flying Dutchmen finished second behind Calvin in the MIAA regular season standings, but came back to defeat their rival in the conference championship game.  A week later Hope again defeated Calvin to advance to the Sectional tournament.

Senior Greg Immink and Andy Phillips joined Hope's 1,000 point club this season.  Phillips enters the Sectional ranked 16th (1,192 points) and Immink is 22nd (1,110).

Seniors Greg Immink, Andy Phillips and Eric Voisin were voted to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) all-conference first team while junior Stephen Cramer received second team recognition.  Phillips, a two-sport athlete who also excels in tennis, is a two-time basketball honoree.

Sophomore Marcus Vanderheide led the MIAA in three-point shooting this season and has maintained the same percentage through all games (61%).

At the end of the regular season Hope's starters were all averaging in double figures, a first in Hope basketball history.  Entering the Sectional tournament, Hope's five starters are separated in scoring by only 2.1 points -- Andy Phillips 11.8, Stephen Cramer 11.7, Marcus Vanderheide 11.1, Greg Immink 10.2 and Eric Voisin 9.7.
