Hope College will welcome legendary Indian artist Shafaatullah Khan to the Knickerbocker Theatre on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 7:30 p.m.

Khan is one of the only artists to have mastered three different instruments: the sitar, surbahar, and tabla. He will perform on all three with accompaniment during his Holland visit.

Khan has performed throughout the world and recorded extensively, including three recent CDs titled "Rhythms of Nature," which were produced by Deepak Chopra.

He debuted at a festival in England at the age of 11, and has since performed at such venues as the Lincoln Center in New York, Royal Albert Hall in London, The Great Hall of Kremlin in Moscow, Suntory Hall in Tokyo and the Acropolis in Athens.

He has also had his performances televised, and has been featured on shows in Germany, England and the United States. He starred in the IMAX movie "Pulse: A Stomp Odyssey," which was shown worldwide.

"A virtuoso," "The Washington Post" has said. "Khan explored the rhythmic intricacies of percussive sound in a way that was both intellectual and poetic."

Known for his compositions as well as his playing, Khan is taking the tradition of music in his family to new heights.

"Any clichéd ideas the audience may have had about Indian music quickly dissipated as Khan began playing," reviewed "The Star Herald."

His family's lineage in music can be traced back over 400 years, and Khan is aware of the standards set for his legendary family. His multidimensional musical repertoire distinguishes him in this long legacy.

"Applause has never been a yardstick for success for Shafaatullah Khan, the rising star in the world of classical music, but the thunderous ovation never ceased throughout his performance on the tabla and sitar," said "The Chandigarh Tribune" in India.

While on campus Khan will also be offering a lecture and demonstration for some Hope classes.

Tickets for the concert are just $5 for adults, and free for children 18 and under, and may be reserved through the ticket office in the DeVos Fieldhouse. The ticket office is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and may be called at (616) 395-7890.
