The public is invited. Admission is free.
Schakel is an internationally respected scholar of C.S. Lewis's work and has written six books on Lewis, three of them about the Chronicles of Narnia. His most recent book about the Chronicles, "The Way into Narnia: A Reader's Guide," was published last year by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. His first, "Reading with the Heart: The Way into Narnia," was published by Eerdmans in 1979.
The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis include seven books published between 1950 and 1956. The first in the series, "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe," was adapted as a live-action, big-budget film released last December by Walden Media and Walt Disney Pictures.
Schakel is the Peter C. and Emajean Cook Professor of English at Hope, where he has taught since 1969. In addition to his books about Lewis, his publications include a poetry anthology co-authored with Hope colleague Jack Ridl and two books on Jonathan Swift.
In 2004, Hope presented him with the "Ruth and John Reed Faculty Achievement Award," bestowed upon a faculty member who is a superior teacher and has also contributed significantly to some other area of professional life.
Schakel's address is being presented through the college's Arts and Humanities Colloquium Series. The Maas Center is located on Columbia Avenue at 11th Street.
