Two Hope College students died from injuries suffered in a two-vehicle accident in Muskegon (Mich.) County on August 10, 2007.

Samuel (Sam) A. Meengs of Zeeland, Mich. was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Karen A. Linder of Sioux City, Iowa died at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids two days later.

Both Sam and Karen would have been sophomores at Hope this fall. They were each 19-years-of-age. Each achieved academic honors in their first year at Hope earning Dean's List recognition. Sam was a pre-med student while Karen intended to pursue a career in physical therapy. Sam was a diver on Hope's swimming team.

The two were en route to Sam's family cottage at Hess Lake in Newaygo County when the accident occurred. The accident was investigated by the Muskegon County Sheriff Department.

A funeral service for both students was held on Wednesday, Aug. 15 in Dimnent Memorial Chapel on the Hope College campus.

A time rememberance will be held for the Hope community on Thursday, Sept. 6.
