The Hope College Wind Symphony will perform on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in Dimnent Memorial Chapel.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
The Wind Symphony will perform a wide variety of pieces under the direction of Gabe Southard, who is making his directing debut with the group. Southard joined the Hope faculty this fall as an assistant professor of music.
The first half of the concert will include Giovanni Gabrieli's "Canzon Septimi Toni, No. 1"; "Le Nozze di Figaro," by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; and Gustav Holst's "First Suite in E flat for Military Band, Op. 28 No. 1." Following intermission the concert will continue with Percy Aldridge Grainger's "Irish Tune from County Derry"; Karel Husa's "Al Fresco"; and "Nobles of the Mystic Shrine," by John Philip Sousa.
Southard recently completed his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Conducting at Michigan State University, where he worked with Professor John Whitwell. Prior to his residence at MSU, he served as Wind Symphony conductor and Flute Studio teacher at the University of Michigan-Flint, where he also taught Orchestration, Music Appreciation, and Advanced Conducting.
While living in Cincinnati, Southard served as conductor of the Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble from 1999 to 2002. Under his direction, CYWE toured England and Scotland, taking first place at the Bournemouth International Musicmakers Festival, completed a CD of the works of Mark Camphouse, and was invited to perform at the Ohio Music Educators Regional Conference.
There will be pre-concert talk before the performance at 6:30 p.m. in Wichers Auditorium of Nykerk Hall of Music.
Dimnent Memorial Chapel is located on College Avenue at 12th Street. Nykerk Hall of Music is located in the central campus along the former 12th Street between College and Columbia avenues.
