The Flying Dutchmen will renew their oldest football rivalry on Saturday (Oct. 13) when they travel to Kalamazoo College for a homecoming showdown with the Hornets.
Kickoff will be 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast by WHTC-AM (1450) and WFUR-FM (102.9).
This series is Hope's oldest current football rivalry dating back to 1910. It has been known as the "Wooden Shoes Rivalry" since 1931. The Flying Dutchmen own a 46-34-6 advantage in the series, including a 45-7 win in Holland last year. Hope has defeated Kalamazoo 11 years in-a-row.
The Flying Dutchmen will be bidding for their 12th consecutive league victory dating back to the 2005 season. Hope's longest MIAA winning streak is 13- in-a-row under coach Ray Smith from 1980-82. Hope also had an 11-game winning streak in 2000-01.
Hope will also be bidding for its 400th all-time victory. The Flying Dutchmen over their 97-year history are 399-311-38.
Senior Joey Goeb (East Grand Rapids HS) is the MIAA's Special Teams Player of the Week. He was outstanding on his returns last Saturday, returning kickoffs 54 and 39 yards and a punt for 36 yards. For the season he is averaging 26.1 on kickoff returns and 13.2 yards on punt returns. The all-time Hope single season mark for kickoff returns is 27.6 yards by Ed Sanders in 1971 and for punt returns it is 15.3 yards by Nick Conrad in 1999. Goeb also caught four passes for 117 yards and a touchdown against Alma.
Senior tailback David Booko's (Three Rivers HS) three touchdowns last Saturday raised his career total to 41 (39 rushing, 2 receiving). The career record for touchdowns scored rushing is 46 by Brandon Graham from 1994-97 and for total TDs it is 47, also by Brandon Graham.
Senior tight end Kevin VandenBosch (Calvin Christian HS) needs two receptions to reach 100 over his career. This season he has 23 catches for 250 yards and for his career has 98 for 1,117 yards.
Senior receiver Doug Van Eerden (Grand Rapids Christian HS) is maximizing his pass receptions. This season he has had seven of his 26 catches result in touchdowns and over the past two seasons he has 15 TDs off 71 receptions. Over his career he is averaging 17.2 yards per reception (77 catches for 1,323 yards and 16 TDs.).
