The Hope College Great Performance Series will feature The Hot Club of San Francisco on Thursday, Jan. 24, at 7:30 p.m. in Dimnent Memorial Chapel.

The Hot Club of San Francisco presents a unique sound and live performance for jazz, guitar and music fans. The ensemble celebrates the music of Django Reinhardt's "Gypsy Jazz" and Stephane Grappelli's pioneering Hot Club de France. The Hot Club of San Francisco borrows the all-string instrumentation of violin, bass and three guitars from the original Hot Club, but breathes new life into the music with innovative arrangements of classic tunes and original compositions from the group's lead guitarist Paul Mehling.

"One of the most cohesive and entertaining Gypsy swing bands in the United States," is how the "San Francisco Chronicle" hasdescribed the Hot Club of San Francisco.

The performance will also include the group's "Silent Surrealism" project, created in conjunction with the San Francisco Silent Film Festival. The Hot Club accompanies four early silent films with its distinctive music as part of the performance.

Mehling has been playing the guitar at the age of six and gathered a wealth of experience in a variety of genres. He formed The Hot Club of San Francisco in 1991, and the club released its first CD, titled, "QHCSF," in 1992. For the past 13 years the club has released 10 CDs, to critical acclaim.

"Intricate, scorching and often brilliant solos," is how "Acoustic Guitar" has reviewed Mehling's work.

Evan Price, violinist for The Hot Club of San Francisco, is a 10-year veteran of the world-renowned, Grammy-winning jazz ensemble, the Turtle Island Quartet. During his tenure in TurtleIsland, Price gave more than 500 performances in concert venues from Latvia to Australia.

Tickets for the performance are on sale at the ticket office in the main lobby of the DeVos Fieldhouse, and cost $17 for regular admission, $12 for senior citizens, and $6 for children 18 and under. The ticket office is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can be called at (616) 395-7890.

The DeVos Fieldhouse is located at 222 Fairbanks Ave., between Ninth and 11th streets. Dimnent Memorial Chapel is located at 277 College Ave., on College Avenue at 12th Street.
