The Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports Medicine at Hope College will feature the address "Emergency Preparedness in Sports Medicine" by Dr. Katie Walsh, ATC, of East Carolina University of Greenville, N.C., on Thursday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m. in the Maas Center.

The public is invited. Admission is free.

Walsh will discuss the importance in sports medicine of developing action plans that provide guidelines in advance for coping with emergencies in specific venues and situations. She will review the stands of both the National Athletic Trainers' Association and the National Collegiate Athletic Association concerning such emergency action plans, discuss the components of such plans and share examples.

Walsh is the director of athletic training education at East Carolina University, and is one of the nation's foremost experts on planning for sports emergencies. She served as the primary author on the NATA's position paper on the topic, and on a similar statement related to lightning safety in sports.

The Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports Medicine, which features a variety of topics, is designed for health care professionals with an interest in physically active patients, and is intended for students, educators and clinicians alike. It is co-sponsored by Shoreline Orthopaedics, Orthopaedic Associates of Grand Rapids and the college.
