A variety of activities have been scheduled on Monday through Friday, Feb. 25-29, to commemorate Asian Awareness Week at Hope College.

The week is coordinated by Hope's Asian Perspective Association (HAPA), a student organization working in conjunction with the college's Office of Multicultural Education.

The public is invited to all of the five events. Admission is free.

The week will begin with a Tae Kwon Do demonstration by the college's Martial Arts Club on Monday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. in room 1116 of the A. Paul Schaap Science Center.

The 1999 Japanese film "Kikujiro" will be shown on Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 8 p.m. in room 111, the multicultural lounge, of the MarthaMillerCenter for Global Communication. Nominated for the Golden Palm Award at the Cannes Film Festival, the drama/comedy features an unlikely duo in a series of adventures as one of the pair travels to see the mother he has never met. The event will include an Asian appetizer and tea.

Visitors will have an opportunity to learn basic phrases in Chinese, Japanese and Korean and also to learn origami at "learning stations" on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 5:30 p.m. in the Phelps Hall multicultural lounge.

The forthcoming presidential election will be the focus of the discussion-oriented "The Asian American Vote - Election 2008" on Thursday, Feb. 28, at 4 p.m. in the Phelps Hall multicultural lounge.

The week will conclude with the presentation "Dancing Around the World" on Friday, Feb. 29, at 7p.m. in Snow Auditorium of Nykerk Hall of Music. The event will feature various dances from around the world.

The Martha Miller Center for Global Communication is located at 257 Columbia Ave., at the corner of Columbia Avenue and 10th Street. Nykerk Hall of Music is located in the central Hope campus on the former 12th Street between College and Columbia avenues. Phelps Hall is located at 154 E. 10th St., on Columbia Avenue at 10th Street. The A. Paul Schaap Science Center is located at 35 E. 12th Street, at 12th Street and College Avenue.
