A total of eight Hope College students have received Dean's Science Division Research Awards from the college.
The students who have been honored are Marlee Bogema, Daniel J. Callam, Andrew J. Foster, Christopher C. Hall, Kathryn "Katie" L. Johnson, Mark J. Panaggio, Caitlin E. Rice and Emily Anne Schuiteman.
Presented by the division of natural and applied sciences, the awards provide stipends for summer research at the college. A recipient has been named for each department within the division.
Considerations for the $3,800 awards include interest in science, promise of research and scientific accomplishment, academic standing and departmental endorsement. The recipients are also eligible for a subsidy for summer housing on campus.
The eight competitively selected recipients will be among approximately 180 students who will be conducting research at the college this summer supported from endowed funds at the college as well as through external grants received by Hope as well as individual members of the faculty.
Bogema is a junior nursing major from Grandville. She is working with Paulette Chaponniere, associate professor of nursing, on the research project "Acculturation, Coping, and Pregnancy Stress Among Hispanic and Hispanic-American Women."
Callam is a senior history and geology major from Holland. He is working with Dr. Brian Bodenbender, associate professor of geology and environmental science and chairperson of the department, on the research project "Measurement of Sand Dune Motion Using Digital Photogrammetry."
Foster is a sophomore computer science major from Battle Creek. He is working with Dr. Charles Cusack, visiting assistant professor of computer science, on the research project "Volunteer Computing Games."
Hall is a junior physics major from Pataskala, Ohio. He is working with Dr. Paul DeYoung, who is the Kenneth G. Herrick Professor of Physics, on the research project "Study of the Decay Energy of 12, 13 Li."
Johnson is a senior mathematics and Spanish major from Wheaton, Ill. She is working with Dr. Stephanie Edwards, associate professor of mathematics, and Dr. Darin Stephenson, associate professor of mathematics and chairperson of the department, on the research project "A Stochastic Approach to 'Lights Out.'"
Panaggio is a senior engineering and mathematics major from Muskegon. He is working with Dr. Roger Veldman, associate professor of engineering, on the research project "Mapping Transient Pressures from a Nearby Explosive Detonation."
Rice is a senior biology and chemistry major from Spring Lake. She is working with Dr. Virginia McDonough, associate professor of biology, on the research project "Role of MGA2 in regulation of lipid metabolism in the model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae."
Schuiteman is a sophomore chemistry major from Fremont. She is working with Dr. Maria Burnatowska-Hledin, professor of biology and chemistry, on the research project "The Effects of Resveratrol on VACM-1 Dependent Inhibition of Estrogen-Receptor Expression in Cancer Cells."
